Henderson County Youth Livestock Summer Wrap Up

Now that the Mountain State Fair has come and gone, our 3 main youth livestock projects have wrapped up for the year! The livestock judging team competed at the end of July, the 4H Pullet Project show was in August, and the Dairy Steer project concluded at the beef show at the fair. We are super proud of the youth who participated in each of the projects and wanted to highlight a few special moments from each.

American Fruit / Vegetable Grower Recognizes Local Grower, Researcher
Each year the American Fruit Grower and the American Vegetable Grower magazines recognize 40 individuals under 40 years old from across the nation. These individuals are recognized for their leadership and innovation in their industries. Individuals can be farmers, researchers or in the agribusiness sector.

The Class of 2022 will be recognized in the October editions of the two magazines. They will also be recognized at the 2022 Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable and Farm Market Expo to be held in Grand Rapids, MI in December.

The two local folks recognized this year were Jerrod Nix of Flavor Full Farms in Edneyville and Dr. Tom Kon at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River.

4-H Mini-Garden Wrap Up!

his summer Henderson County 4-H was able to offer the Mini Gardening program for youth ages 8-18! In May, youth received their plant seeds and seedlings provided by 4-H to fill a 10×12 garden of their own! Participants learned from Isaac Wyatt, N.C. Cooperative Extension Horticultural Intern, about how to plant and grow a healthy vegetable garden throughout the summer! Types of vegetables and flowers included: Tomatoes, peppers, okra, summer squash, sunflowers, and marigolds.


Nickels for Know How Referendum Coming November 17, 2022

Nickels for Know-How was started in 1951 as a voluntary assessment on feed and fertilizer produced and purchased in North Carolina. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services collects the money from manufacturers of feed and fertilizer. It’s that time of year again when the days start to get shorter and the summer plants start to wilt. But just because summer is coming to a closing doesn’t mean your garden has to. College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has created a late season planting guide to keep your garden producing fresh produce throughout fall and winter.




I recently had the wonderful opportunity to meet many of y’all at the N.C. Mountain State Fair and share a little bit about what the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) does.
