Preparing for Disasters and Storms

Even though the hurricane season seemed to be light this year, we are seeing storms coming in and even affecting our WNC mountain area. There are state resources that can help you prepare for disasters like storms, flooding and power outages. Here are a few that you may want to keep bookmarked or print off information in case you find yourself caught in a disaster.

McDowell County Nickels for Know-How Referendum

The Nickels for Know-How referendum is being held on November 17 to let users and producers of feed or fertilizer decide if they wish to continue the self-assessment program. This program has been in place since 1948, and the law requires that a new referendum be held every six years.

WNC AgOptions Grant Cycle Is Open

WNC AgOptions is now accepting grant applications from farmers diversifying or expanding their businesses. With funding from the N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, WNC AgOptions is distributing a total of $220,000. The application deadline is November 18.  Intent to Apply deadline is Oct 14.

Container Gardening Workshop

The Master Gardeners of McDowell County along with Settlemyre Nursery invite you to join a Container Gardening Workshop on Thursday, October 6, at 6 p.m. at the McDowell Senior Center, 100 Spaulding Road, Marion.

Importance of Soil Sampling

The summer heat has definitely put a hurting on pastures and hay fields, therefore it is important to do soil tests and put out fertilizer accordingly. Before adding any lime or fertilizer this fall, I would highly recommend doing a soil sample, which is free from April 1 to November 30.

With the winter months ahead of us, many of us are wondering how will we have enough hay to get us through the winter without selling all the cattle? While soil samples are great for getting a general idea of soil health, it is also important to take hay samples.

N.C. Cooperative Extension wants people to move. It’s good for your physical and mental health. McDowell Moves 2022 is a walking/hiking event on October 15, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at a trail, greenway, or neighborhood street near you.

It’s Apple Season!

It’s October, which means it’s finally fall, cooler weather and tons of apples! Since 1996, National Apple Month has been celebrated every October. There are many different varieties of apples. You can get them sweet as you like, or choose the sour ones for baking. If you get the chance to go pick them yourself, load up the family and go!

Come Grow With Us: Junior Master Gardener Program in McDowell

The Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program is a youth gardening program of the NC Cooperative Extension. The Master Gardeners of McDowell will be launching a JMG Program this Fall/Winter. The volunteer leaders of the Junior Master Gardener program will at the Historic Marion Tailgate Market, Tuesday, October 25 from 3 to 6 p.m. to answer questions.

It is starting to get cooler and leaves are starting to change, That means it’s almost time for our annual McDowell 4-H Decorated Pumpkin contest!!! A limited number of pumpkins are available. Call 652-8104 to reserve yours by October 5.
