CAMDEN EXTENSION CONNECTIONS
OCTOBER 2022 RECAP

Agriculture
Agriculture Community Outreach
Agriculture is the number one industry in Camden County, with cash receipts fluctuating between 32 to 50 million dollars annually over the last several years according to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. While nearly every road in the county touches land in agricultural production a number of people are disconnected from farming. To raise awareness to the crops we grow, their uses, and the value of agriculture the Agri-Pride Combine Simulator was developed by the Agriculture Agents in Camden, Currituck, Chowan, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans counties.

At the Camden Heritage Festival on October 8th a steady line of people enjoyed the virtual reality experience in the Combine Simulator. Austin also ran the Simulator as a stop at the Community Helper Truck Day on October 14th for Kindergarten through 3rd graders at Grady Primary.

More In My Basket at the Senior Center
This Month 16 seniors joined us as we prepared buttermilk biscuits. Seniors learned to stretch their food dollars by utilizing what they have on hand to create a biscuit mix. The mix can be utilized for a number of recipes. North Carolina State University in partnership with N.C. Cooperative Extension has developed the program More In My Basket (MIMB) which helps reduce food insecurity by connecting North Carolina residents to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). To educate more citizens about their eligibility for benefits, how to cut food costs, and how to create a food budget educational classes are held monthly at the Camden Center for Active Adults.
Fermentation Series
We concluded our first-ever fermentation series with ginger beer and kombucha this month. Twelve participants learned the intricacies of fermenting beverages safely and the benefits of fermentation. In each of our fermentation classes, participants received a fermentation kit to go home and try out their fermentation skills. Participants reported an increase in awareness of food safety, as well as the basic procedures for fermentation.
