FAMACHA Training for Goat Owners

One of the biggest frustrations small ruminant (sheep, goats, etc.) producers encounter is susceptibility to parasites. Here in the southeast, our warm, humid climate often creates an ideal environment for parasites of all kinds.

One particular parasite, the Barber Pole worm, has been particularly hard to control and devastating to sheep and goat populations ove rthe last several years. The FAMACHA system, developed in South Africa, has proven to be an excellent tool for the detection and treatment of this pest. In order to use the FAMACHA system, producers must be certified, as misuse of the system will not lead to adequate identification and treatment of the parasite.

The course involves a classroom session, followed by a hands-on session that will be conducted at the farm of Coy and Brandi Adams on Atoah road.
