Project Record Books

It's time to start getting your Project Record Books completed!!!

What is a Project record book?
A 4-H project record book is a compilation of all of a 4-Her's work in a given year regarding a specific topic.

Who does a 4-H Project record book?
All 4-Her's are welcome and encouraged to do this!!! The age divisions for competition are    5-7, 8-10,11-12,13-15, and 16-18.

Project books are required to go to some events like the annual Electric Congress.

Alexander County 4-H will be taking a group to the Eastern 4-H Center for a weeklong camp this summer.  June 18-24, 2023 will be the dates for this camp.  If you are interested and need more information please contact DJ Salyer at dj_salyer@ncsu.edu or call 828-632-3125.

Alexander County 4-H Clubs

Now is a great time to get involved with 4-H Clubs in Alexander County.  Below is a list of our active clubs at this time.  If you are looking for a club and need more information please contact the 4-H Office at 828-632-3125.
 
Alexander County Livestock 4-H Club met on Monday, October 3rd and had a very informative lesson about Equine Massage from Jesse Parson. She talked about the benefits and how it would correct problems that your horse was having. We had several new faces and hope to see more the 1st Monday night in November at 7:00 p.m. at the Alexander County Service Center.  
Alexander County 4-H Garden Club met Thursday, October 13th and members put their floral design skills to the test by making their very own pumpkin bouquets! Each was beautiful and unique to the person creating it. A big thank you to Deal Orchards for donating all the pumpkins and to Summer Fresh Flower Farms for supplying the pretty flowers! We had buckets of flowers that were left over that were taken to the Taylorsville House for residents to make their own bouquets! Take a look at some of these gorgeous creations!

Southern Grace 4-H Club
met Thursday, October 20 for their monthly meeting and had a great group and added some new faces too.  The group made freezer apple pie filling and ended with sampling two homemade apple pies!!  Their next club meeting will be held Thursday, November 17th at 5:00 p.m. at the Alexander County Service Center.
 
Boots and Breeches 4-H Club - meets last the Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m.  Location:  Foothills Equestrian Center-Taylorsville
 



Shockers 4-H Electric Club
met on Tuesday, October 18th to learned more about circuits and electrical safety.  The members made switches to see how circuits work.    The had two new families join them! The Shockers will meet again on Tuesday, November 15th at 6:30 p.m. at the Alexander County Service Center.
Whisk it Up 4-H Cooking Club met on Thursday, September 22 to learn about how to grow, prepare and preserve apples.  They used apples for their recipes.  In October the topic will be on pumpkins.  Please join their next meeting on October 27 at 4:00 p.m. at the NC Cooperative Extension-Alexander County Center.
WHEP (Wildlife Habitat Education Program) 
The WHEP team practiced on October 19th. We discussed successional stages and the animals that call each home. Several members of our WHEP team traveled to Grandfather Mountain for the mystery trip where we got a behind the scenes look at some of their wildlife.  We will travel to Camp Harrison on November 9th for our next club meeting. October 4-H Round-up
Alexander 4-H held the Apple Peeling Contest at the Taylorsville Apple Festival on October 15, 2022.  A special thanks to Shockers 4-H Club for coming and assisting with the contest.  There were several competitors and the longest peel was 74"!!  Below are the final results:

  • Pastor Jeff Webb won the men's division with 74"
  • Ema Ester won the women's division with 32"
  • Emily Ward won the youth division with 11"

All of the winners were given a gift certificate for a bag of apples of their choosing from Deal Orchards.
 
The 4-H Mystery Trip was a blast!!! The group traveled up to Grandfather Mountain to learn about wildlife as well as hike and explore in the park. We had an awesome time walking across the Mile High Swinging Bridge, hearing the elk bugle, and seeing the colors of fall.
Attention Volunteers!!
This conference is open to anyone working with 4-H Youth across the US and is hosted by volunteers from the southern region. The conference will be held October 6-9, 2022 on site at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, GA. Virtual and pre-recorded options are available for those that cannot join the conference in person. This event gives access to top-notch educational sessions as well as a chance to meet other 4-H volunteers. Learn more and register.

Training Topics:
4-H & STEM
Danny Lough, 4-H Agent - Davie County Limit: 40 people
Come learn about the various Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical (STEM) curriculum and activities available through North Carolina 4-H and how they can relate to your 4-H program. We'll delve into the scientific method and see how it relates to 4-H's Experiential Learning Model. This program will include several hands-on activities and examples.

Conference 101: A First Timer’s Orientation Limit: 50 people

What is this?  What room is it in?  Where am I?  First time at Leaders' Conference, huh?  Check out this session to get the knowledge and tools to help you navigate through this weekend.  Find out what it is all about; have fun, meet new friends and ENJOY!

Electric Project Activity and Program Overview Limit: 40 people
Dr. Grant Ellington, Extension Associate Professor - Biological and Agricultural Engineering, NC State
The hands-on electric workshop provides a training opportunity for volunteers and county Extension personnel to learn how to solder and assemble an electronic printed circuit board kit. Counties trained are eligible to receive 20 free electric kits to use in their county program. Funding is provided by Duke Energy and Dominion Energy. This is also an opportunity to learn more about the 4-H Electric Program opportunities.


ALL 4-H members and volunteers MUST be enrolled in 4-H Online to participate in any programs or clubs that are provided by Alexander County 4-H.
