I'm pretty sure November started yesterday but according to the calendar, it's over halfway gone! It has been a busy couple of weeks preparing for the holidays, attending meetings, and planning for the upcoming months.

Below you'll find some of my favorite holiday topics, class updates, and upcoming events. As always, if you have any questions or want more information, feel free to call me (682) 682-6186 or email niki_maness@ncsu.edu

Soup Season
While dropping off the items collected during October for Reconciliation House, director John Miller shared how it was getting harder to keep food stocked. Instead of a general food drive, throughout the month we'll be collecting ingredients to make a hearty vegetable soup. Local 4-Hers will assemble individual meal kits for families and donate them to Reconciliation House for distribution.

Eat Smart, Move More Challenge
November kicks off the holiday season with Thanksgiving celebrations, followed by what feels like a constant month of eating during the month of December. If you are determined to maintain, not gain during this time, join us for the The Holiday Challenge. The challenge runs through November 14th - December 31st, and registration is free. Participants can engage as much or as little as they would like to, as all resources are sent to their email and available online.

An Attitude of Gratitude
November has been dubbed "National Gratitude Month" because of the Thanksgiving holiday toward the end of the month. Over the years, studies have been conducted on showing gratitude and its effects on mental and physical health. The practice of showing or expressing gratitude lessens stress, anxiety, and depression, improves your physical health, and simply makes you happy.

This Month's Canning FAQ's
Fall weather comes with cravings for soups, chilis, and stews. It's also peak season for harvesting and processing wild game like bear and deer. Our canning FAQ this month features the safest ways to can meat strips, cubes, or chunks (bear, beef, veal, lamb, pork, or venison) at home.
