Extension News Currituck County

November 2022

NC Cooperative Extension in Currituck is pleased to welcome Anna Martin to our team. Anna will be serving as the Currituck Extension Administrative Assistant, providing support for the total Extension program. Anna will be serving in the position formerly held by Sherry Lynn who was promoted to the District Administrative Associate position in August.

Anna comes to Currituck Extension with experience in the business, finance and education realms. She has been described by her former employers as very detail oriented, highly organized and possessing great interpersonal skills. “Anna’s skill and experience are an outstanding match for our position here in Currituck and we are looking forward to a very long and fruitful working relationship with her” stated Cameron Lowe, County Extension Director. Ms. Martin offered the following statement: “I am excited to be part of the Currituck Extension Center.  I look forward to engaging with the community in my new role.”

October Highlights

October started in style for NC Cooperative Extension in Currituck as we dodged a hurricane and celebrated Currituck Farmers with our annual festival on the first of the month.This is our slightly longer than 60 second run down for October. Included are overall numbers as well as highlights and images from 4-H, Agriculture, and Family and Consumer Sciences programs.

Holiday Festivities

Believe it or not, the holidays are almost upon us! On December 2nd join in on the fun at the Currituck County Center of N.C. Cooperative Extension. The night begins with Reindeer Games at 5:30; the annual tree lighting at 6:30; and culminates with the main event, Currituck’s 29th Annual Holiday Parade at 7:00. Come out early, and play holiday-themed games, view the County Tree Lighting, and enjoy some cookies and hot cocoa. Bring a chair or blanket so you can have a comfortable spot to view the Holiday parade hosted by the Currituck County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #89.

If you cannot attend in person or are still not ready to be back in public, we will be live-streaming the tree lighting and parade on the Currituck Extension YouTube channel. Visit, subscribe, and ring the bell so you are notified when we go live on December 2nd.

2022 Corn Variety Trial Data

The Northeast Ag Expo Team is comprised of agriculture Extension agents in Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans counties. Annually, this group conducts variety trials of corn, wheat, and soybeans. With the support of seed companies, the Ag Expo Team plants multiple trials across the six counties of Northeast North Carolina. These trials are conducted using the same varieties in each of the species planted. The data from these field experiments are compiled and shared with farmers across the region to help them to make profitable agriculture decisions for the upcoming cropping season.

This year, N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center Staff partnered with Barco Brother’s Farms to produce the Currituck Corn Variety Trial. Data from this trial, and the other NE Ag Expo Counties’ can be found in the article linked below.

4-H International Cooking

Food is the one thing that connects people globally. Currituck 4-H will help your child learn about our world one dish at a time! Youth, ages 11-15 will learn unique cooking techniques, experience recipes, and discover facts and features about the countries and cultures of our world. Each participant will make several dishes using their new found skills and also receive a mini cookbook chock full of recipes to try later at home. These workshops will be held at the Currituck Extension Center from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and last for about 3 and 1/2 hours.
