Alexander County 4-H Clubs

Now is a great time to get involved with 4-H Clubs in Alexander County.  Below is a list of our active clubs at this time.  If you are looking for a club and need more information please contact the 4-H Office at 828-632-3125.

Alexander County Livestock 4-H Club met on Monday, November 7th.  Grace Herman talked about her experiences with riding horses at Free Spirit Ranch. She talked about her responsibilities and goals that she has while she is there. Callie Iversen did a team building exercise to show how each and everyone is an important part in 4-H.

The Livestock 4-H Club also met on Monday, December 6th.  They decorated gingerbread houses and played Christmas games.

Their next meeting will be Monday, January 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at the Alexander County Service Center.   New members are welcome to attend!

Alexander County 4-H Garden Club met to learn about harvesting cool season crops and how to use these crops in the kitchen. Cool season crops are generally planted in early fall to early spring because they do not tolerate the heat stress of summer. In September, the 4-H club met to plant some of these cool season vegetables in the community garden. They planted radishes, kale, arugula, swiss chard, cilantro, and lettuce. These crops did very well! A load of radishes and arugula were taken to the Mobile Cafe here in town in October. In November they used the rest of the crop to demonstrate harvesting, how to make refrigerator pickled radishes, and how to make kale chips! The kids surprisingly love the kale chips and the pickled radishes! The next 4-H Garden Club meeting will be December 8th at 5:30pm at the Alexander County Service Center. 4-H'ers will learn how to make wreaths! If your child is interested in joining this garden club, please call our office at 828-632-4451 or email me at cari_mitchell@ncsu.edu.
