Check Your Dirt NC!
The information you provide about your garden will help identify potential risks of soil contaminants in your garden and provide advice about how to keep yourself and other gardeners safe while gardening and eating food grown in the garden. We’ll ask you in what county your garden is located, the history of the site, how your garden is managed, and who gardens.

Sesame Officially Joins the List of U.S. Major Food Allergens
Packaged foods containing ingredients from major food allergens must be clearly listed on the label to help protect consumers. On January 1, 2023, sesame joins the list of major food allergens making it the ninth food allergen recognized in the U.S. In November 2022, the FDA released a draft guidance (revision of previous edition) to help the industry comply with changes to labeling regulations.

Radon Awareness Month
Did you know that radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in America and claims the lives of 21,000 Americans each year? Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms when uranium in the earth’s surface begins to breakdown. Radon is all around us and normally isn’t a problem. However, if your home is sitting on soil that is emitting high amounts of radon gas, you and your family could be at risk.

Planning Your Garden
Yes, it’s cold. Much less happening in the garden. But it’s also a reflective time of year, and this is the best time of year to evaluate and plan. Think about what went well in 2022, and what you want to work on or change. What piques your palate, and how can you help those plants to thrive?

4-H & Youth Development
