First Day Outdoors kicks off Year of the Trail. McDowell Trails Association is hosting a hike on the Catawba River Greenway.

Are you interested in starting your own farming operation, or are you new to farming? Want to sharpen your knowledge and skills? If so, the Small Farm Boot Camp may be for you.
You may take one, two, or all modules, but you must register.
Tips to Protect Your Chicken Flock From Avian Influenza
Do you have backyard chickens? If so, you may want to be on the lookout for suspicious activity. It is that time of year when Avian Influenza is starting to pick up again. Most of the cases seen so far this year have been in backyard chicken flocks.
The Extension Gardener classes are open to anyone wanting to learn more about good gardening practices based on research-based information. Anyone can attend these classes. The classes will be taught weekly on Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. starting February 16.

Winter Weather Brings Soup Season
These frigid temperatures that have rolled across the area are definitely saying it is Soup Season! Soups are easy and can feed many people. You can serve with crackers, breads or any other side you choose. You can have veggies or meats. You can have spicy, sweet or bland.
First Meeting Set for Junior Master Gardeners
The JMG program is a youth gardening program of the NC Cooperative Extension. JMG engages children in hands-on group and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment, cultivate leadership, personal responsibility, community involvement, and critical thinking skills.
The Feisty 4-H Club is looking to expand and add new members this year. This club meets once a month on Monday evening. The meeting place varies, but is generally in the Marion area. This club is open to youth 5-18. This is a general-purpose club with no set program area.
