February 2023
Happy February!

There are a lot of great programs coming up. Please read through the newsletter to learn more about the upcoming Hog Farmer movie, Dining with Diabetes classes and take a look at what's going on with our youth programs. The month of February is Black History Month. As many pause to reflect on the accomplishments of African Americans across the country, we take the opportunity to reflect on the contributions of African Americans to the  Cooperative Extension Service, specifically those who have made great impacts in Granville County.
J.R. Redding
J.R. Redding was an Agriculture Agent for 28 years in Granville County. Below is a picture of Mr. Redding in 1942, pointing out to farmers the wood cut from a thinning operation on the farm of Willie Peace, Route 4, of Oxford. Mr. Reddings support of the community and legacy lives on through the Redding Scholarship that provides financial support to Granville County students going to college.

Johnsie C. Cunningham
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the contributions of Johnsie C. Cunningham.

I had the honor of being hired by Johnsie in 2004. She was not only the Granville County Extension Director, she was the service's first black female director. Her contributions to the Family and Consumer Sciences program are unrivaled and she was a pivotal leader for the Extension Volunteer Association. Johnsie was committed to Granville County, serving on various civic boards and foundations. Johnsie was also the first female member and president of the Oxford Rotary Club.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Juvenile Community Service

The Juvenile Community Service and Restitution program completed a variety of community service projects during the holiday season. Some of those included packing food boxes at Area Congregations in Ministry (ACIM), dropping off books to local Little Libraries in Creedmoor and Oxford, and making holiday plaques for Tony Rest Home in Oxford, NC. We were able to complete these projects with the help of 4 middle and high school students.
Restorative Circles

The Granville County Restorative Circles program held its first restorative circle on Thursday, December 1, 2022 with 5 community members, youth and family members. The youth responsible was referred for simple assault. The group discussed the offense, the harm caused, the harm experienced and how to move forward by creating a plan of action. The program is looking forward to more opportunities to create these spaces for youth and families.

Granville County Teen Court
The Granville County Teen Court program held the first hearing of 2023 on Tuesday, January 10th. One youth successfully completed the program and presented an exit speech to the audience. One youth had his case heard and the outcome decided by a jury of his peers.
