4-H Livestock Skillathon Team

Calling all youth interested in participating on a 4-H Livestock Skillathon Team!! Do you enjoy learning about livestock or would like to learn more and are 8 - 18 years of age? The next meeting will be held with the Livestock 4-H Club meeting on February 6th at 7pm at the  NC Cooperative Extension-Alexander County Center.  Mays Meats will presenting a program on different meat cuts.   If you would like more information contact Allison Brown at

Community Service Project Opportunity
Shockers 4-H Club has started a community service project and would like your help!  They are collecting warm winter items for patients of the Alexander Dialysis Center.  Donations of gloves, scarves, wool socks, diabetic socks and blankets are greatly needed for these patients.  A drop off box has been placed at the NC Cooperative Extension-Alexander County Center location.  If you have any questions please contact the   4-H office.  All donations are greatly appreciated.  

ALL 4-H members and volunteers MUST be enrolled in 4-H Online to participate in any programs or clubs that are provided by Alexander County 4-H.

If you have any questions regarding enrollment or need help with enrollment please contact DJ Salyer at 828-632-3125.  Again, no child or volunteer can participate in 4-H events without being enrolled.
4-H Project Record Books

Project books due:  February 21, 2022

What is a Project record book?
A 4-H project record book is a compilation of all of a 4-Her's work in a given year regarding a specific topic.

Who does a 4-H Project record book?
All 4-Her's are welcome and encouraged to do this!!! The age divisions for competition are    5-7, 8-10,11-12,13-15, and 16-18.

Project books are required to go to some events like the annual Electric Congress.

Alexander County 4-H Clubs

Now is a great time to get involved with 4-H Clubs in Alexander County.  Below is a list of our active clubs at this time.  If you are looking for a club and need more information please contact the 4-H Office at 828-632-3125.
 
Alexander County Livestock 4-H Club met on Monday, January 2, 2023 at the Alexander County Service Center.  Allison Brown, County Extension Director, Livestock Agent, presented an educational program on the different types of feed and materials needed to take care of livestock.  She also spoke to the group about the different breeds of cattle.  Their next meeting will be Monday, February 6, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. at the Alexander County Service Center.  Mays Meats will be providing the educational program on the differents types of meat cuts.   New members are welcome to attend!
 
Alexander County 4-H Garden Club met in January to learn about lichens.  The next 4-H Garden Club meeting will be February 9, 2023 at 5:30pm at the Alexander County Service Center. If your child is interested in joining this garden club, please call our office at 828-632-4451 or email me at cari_mitchell@ncsu.edu.



Southern Grace 4-H Club
met in January and made several types of notebooks.  For some, they hand stitched the binding with pretty covers, others folded and cut scrapbook paper to make mini notebooks.  
Due to limited meeting space this club is not taking any new members at this time.  
 
Shockers 4-H Electric Club met on Tuesday, January 17th to learn about watts, volts and amps.  Club members learned how to determine the number of amps used by lights and other devices in our homes and to not overload the circuit breaker.  We are starting a community service project to help the patients at the Dialysis Center here in our county.  We hope other clubs will also participate with us.  Their next meeting is on Tuesday, February 21st at 6:30pm at the Alexander County Service Center.  New members are welcome to attend!  
 








Whisk it Up 4-H Cooking Club
met in January to learn about ingredients used to make biscuits.  They learned how different ingredients effect the quality and taste of a biscuit. 4-H'ers made two types of biscuits: drop from a homemade biscuit mix and the American tested kitchen recommended biscuit.  T
he next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 26th at 4:00 p.m.  New members are welcome!  
 
WHEP (Wildlife Habitat Education Program) 
The WHEP team met January 18th and discussed the best management practices for wildlife management. The team will continue to practice and prepare for the state competition that will be on May 6th at the PeeDee Wildlife Refuge. The next WHEP Team practice will be Februar 1st and February 22nd.
