Cherokee County 4-H is once again conducting its annual plant and fruit tree sale. All proceeds will go to Cherokee County 4-H. As usual, the plants and trees will be of high quality and reasonably priced. The plant and tree sale starts on February 1 and ends March 10, 2023. Plants will be available for pick up April 5.

A two day Bee School will be held March 25 and April 15. The program is being offered thru a partnership with the Appalachian Beekeepers Club, Extension Master Gardeners℠, and N.C. Cooperative Extension, Cherokee County Center. This workshop is for first time beekeepers or anyone who has an interest in bees.

North Carolina 4-H utilizes an enrollment system for all new and existing 4-H members and volunteers. The online enrollment system is called 4-HOnline. If you created a new family profile in the 4-HOnline system during the 2022 program year – or – if you re-enrolled from a previous year – it is now time to update that record for the new 2023 – 2024 programmatic year. The 4-H Online system is open for enrollment and re-enrollment so log into your account today! Food Drive for
Small Farms Week 2023

March 27-31, 2023 marks the 37th annual Small Farms Week. This is a statewide event presented by Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T State University that recognizes the contributions of small farmers in counties throughout North Carolina. The N.C. Cooperative Extension Cherokee County Center in association with N.C. A&T State University is hosting a Food Drive until March 27th, 2022. Instead of a general collection of canned goods, staff will be collecting items to provide families with ingredients to create a 7 Can Chicken Tortilla Soup. These kits will be donated to food pantries within the county.

A SERIES OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR FARMERS, HOMEOWNERS, GARDENERS AND YOUTH.
Cherokee and Graham County Centers have teamed together to offer a series of Farm School educational programs that will help farmers, homeowners, gardeners and youth learn more about farming, agriculture and rural living in our area. Most workshops are free to anyone who would like to register. However, there is a charge for the grafting workshop to help cover the cost of the materials. WNC Communities is pleased to announce we are now accepting nominations for the 2023 Western North Carolina Agricultural Hall of Fame. This is an opportunity to recognize stewards of the agribusiness sector, as well as honor visionaries and pioneers of the agriculture industry throughout the North Carolina mountains. The guidelines, criteria and nomination form for 2023 are attached. They can also be downloaded from our website here or you may pick up a hardcopy from our office at 594 Brevard Rd., Asheville, NC. Please share the nomination form with those in your organizations and communities who may be interested.
Nominations must be received in our office by Monday, March 13, 2023
The ceremony to induct new members will take place at noon on Friday, August 11, 2023 at the WNC Agricultural Center - Davis Event Center in Fletcher.

2023 Horse Coggins
& Health Clinic Hosted by 4-H

Does your horse need a current coggins test for Equine Infectious Anemia? Have you gotten your horse vaccinated for rabies and West Nile? We have the answers for you. Come on out March 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to the Mountain Folk Center/Cherokee County Fairgrounds, in Murphy, NC and get a coggins test done with same day test results. Dr. Beverly Hargus, from Animals-R-Us, will be the veterinarian providing the shots and test. Major shots like East-West Tetanus, Rabies, Rhino Flu, and West Nile will also be available. Does your horse need its teeth floated? This can be done on-site this very day.
You do not have to live in North Carolina to bring your horse.

Cherokee County 4-H Club Meeting Days!!
We currently have four active 4-H Clubs here in Cherokee County. All of our clubs are open to youth ages 5-18 except for our Cherokee on the Fly 4-H Club. It is open to grades 6-12. Check out the meeting dates and enroll in one of our great 4-H clubs here in Cherokee County. Youth do not have to have animals or know how to tie fly’s in order to join our clubs. All of our 4-H clubs are free to enroll in.
