April 1st | 1:00-3:00 ________________________________ Jim & Jackie Green are the volunteer leaders for a new 4-H club in Lee County. You are invited to come meet them, tour their farm, and provide input for the first year of this 4-H club. This will be a high-touch, interactive first meeting that will set the tone for the year. TEEN RETREAT March 4-5 ________________________________ Lee County 4-H delegates will travel to Ellerbe, NC where Millstone 4-H Camp is located. These 4-H leaders will participate in workshops, district officer election process, and social time all while living the 4-H camp life and sleeping in the camp cabins.

CRECER | Cultivating Research Experiences with Community Engaged Roots July 9-15 ________________________________ Grow as a scientist scholar during the summer kick-off for this year-round research program enrolling Hispanic/Latine high school students from Lee and Chatham Counties. This is a free residential research experience at NC State this summer.

REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER ADVENTURE CAMP IS OPEN July 9-14 | ages 8-14 | $350 ________________________________ Pam Kerley will escort 4-H'ers to Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Camp in Reidsville, NC for six days and five nights of adventure and discovery. A $100 deposit is due at time of registration (4HO events). You will be billed on March 15th for the next installment of $100 and again on April 29th for the last installment of $150. Camp registration includes transportation, a camp t-shirt, and $15 to use in the camp store.

HORTICULTURE SCIENCE SUMMER INSTITUTE July 9-14, 2023 | Applications are open and due April 1st. ________________________________ High school students are invited
to spend a week at NC State University climbing trees, grafting tomatoes, snacking on raspberries, discovering new genes and so much more. The Horticultural Science Summer Institute is a residential, hands-on, pre-college program designed to engage youth into the many career opportunities within horticulture. Students will dig into workshops led by faculty, staff and students on topics ranging from breeding better vegetables, propagating ornamental shrubs, lengthening the life of cut flowers, learning sustainable production and design practices and delving into practical tools that enhance our understanding of plant processes. FIGHT THE BITE POSTER CONTEST Entries are due by 5pm on Monday April 10, 2023 ________________________________
The North Carolina Division of Public Health is bringing back the Fight the Bite campaign for the fifth year. Fight the Bite is a poster artwork contest that encourages students grades K-12 to fight the bite of ticks and mosquitoes, and to prevent vector-borne diseases. Winners will be announced in late April, and winning posters will be displayed in schools, public health departments, and state government buildings throughout North Carolina. NORTH CAROLINA YOUTH INSTITUTE

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences is delighted to invite high school youth to participate in the North Carolina Youth Institute. This program is part of the Global Youth Institute and World Food Prize and provides a platform for students to research and give recommendations to solve key global challenges that range from food insecurity, access to potable water, poverty, human rights and more.
To participate, students research a global issue and write a 2-3 page paper under the supervision of a teacher/mentor (using these downloadable guidelines). Each teacher/mentor must register their student delegate nominee(s) and
submit each student's research paper online by March 13, 2023. 9-12th grade students in the 2022-2023 school year are eligible to participate. On April 14, students attend the daylong institute at NC State University’s >>read more

RESEARCH CONSERVATION WORKSHOP June 25-30th, 2023 | Apply now with your local SWCD ________________________________
The Resource Conservation Workshop is a weeklong intensive study and hands-on conservation workshop requiring student application and participation in a wide range of conservation topics. The workshop is intended to engage students to learn about natural resources and their management in today’s environment. Students participate in field study, tours, hands-on sessions as well as evening activities that focus on college-decision making and career decisions. Awards and scholarships are won and presented to the students under several awards programs. The Resource Conservation Workshop students stay on campus at NC State in dormitories and attend workshop sessions on campus in Williams Hall, Lake Wheeler Research Field Labs as well as field studies at
Falls Lake State Recreation Area and Clemmons State Educational Forest in Clayton. For a sneak peak of past programs watch this video!
The Resource Conservation Workshop is fully sponsored for youth that are accepted! Students are sponsored by their local Soil and Water Conservation District (find yours here) to attend and all applications are done through the local SWCD. The Resource Conservation Workshop is a partnership between the N.C.
Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the Hugh Hammond Bennett Chapter - Soil and Water Conservation Society of America, N.C. Soil and Water Conservation Commission, Division of Soil and Water Conservation and the Crop and Soil Sciences Department at N.C. State University.

SUMMER STAFF NEEDED AT BETSY JEFF PENN 4-H CAMP 2023 ________________________________ Available positions include aquatics instructors (Lifeguards), horseback riding instructors, male counselors, and adventure/trekker counselors (A/T counselors also become lifeguard certified). Staff training starts in early June (actual start date varies on position) and the last day with campers is August 4th. First year staff start out at $300 weekly. Meals are covered from Sunday dinner to Friday lunch, room and board are provided during the summer. Below is the link to our summer application. We use one application for
