Programming in Alexander County Schools

Alexander County 4-H will start Embryology in twenty 2nd grade classrooms on March 7th.  Follow along on facebook to see the process as these students learn about the life cycle in a hands-on project.  We expect to have baby chicks before Spring Break!

Alexander County 4-H has been offering programs to our countys four after school sites this school year. We have had lots of fun doing these programs. Our latest program includes a game where students learn about the predator & prey relationship. We talk about the things all animals need to survive including food, water and shelter, and about some of the predators and prey we have here in Alexander County. The kids play a form of tag with some being predators (Coyotes) and others prey (turkeys). Both Groups must secure items needed for survival before the time runs out, but you can't be tagged if you are in your shelter (hula hoop). This game has been a favorite among the kids and is a great way to get exercise and learn something new along the way!

The WHEP team met for a field day on February 20th. The team spent the day learning about some of the wildlife management taking place on local game lands and Pisgah National Forest. A local Wildlife Biologist met them in the field to discuss what BMP's (best management practices) are being used. We were able to see several food plots, thinned forest, and even a recently prescribed burn area.
