Cherokee County 4-H is once again conducting its annual plant and fruit tree sale. All proceeds will go to Cherokee County 4-H. As usual, the plants and trees will be of high quality and reasonably priced. The plant and tree sale starts on February 1 and ends March 10, 2023. Plants will be available for pick up April 5.

Bee School Registration Slots Are Going Fast
A two day Bee School will be held March 25 and April 15. The program is being offered thru a partnership with the Appalachian Beekeepers Club, Extension Master Gardeners℠, and N.C. Cooperative Extension, Cherokee County Center. This workshop is for first time beekeepers or anyone who has an interest in bees.

Meal Planning Workshop
Join us on March 17th, 2023 from 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m. for the upcoming Meal Planning Workshop! This free educational class is designed for anyone interested in learning more about meal planning and meal prepping. This class will cover various meal planning techniques, USDA MyPlate nutrition guidelines, the basics of meal prepping, and even offer nutritious recipes to take home! Feel free to bring your lunch and learn with us!

Podcast Launches!
N.C. Cooperative Extension has launched the Grow and Graze Podcast! Farm Credit Service donation allowed the purchase of the equipment. The podcast will focus on topics that are relevant and practical for the Western North Carolina Area in the areas of agriculture, gardening, and home horticulture.

4-H Host 2023 Horse Coggins Health Expo Clinic


Does your horse need a current coggins test for Equine Infectious Anemia? Have you gotten your horse vaccinated for rabies and West Nile? We have the answers for you. Come on out March 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to the Mountain Folk Center/Cherokee County Fairgrounds, in Murphy, NC and get a coggins test done with same day test results. Dr. Beverly Hargus, from Animals-R-Us, will be the veterinarian providing the shots and test. Major shots like East-West Tetanus, Rabies, Rhino Flu, and West Nile will also be available. Does your horse need its teeth floated? This can be done on-site this very day.
You do not have to live in North Carolina to bring your horse.


Food Drive for
Small Farms Week 2023
March 27-31, 2023 marks the 37th annual Small Farms Week. This is a statewide event presented by Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T State University that recognizes the contributions of small farmers in counties throughout North Carolina. The N.C. Cooperative Extension Cherokee County Center in association with N.C. A&T State University is hosting a Food Drive until March 27th, 2022. Instead of a general collection of canned goods, staff will be collecting items to provide families with ingredients to create a 7 Can Chicken Tortilla Soup. These kits will be donated to food pantries within the county.

2023 Farm School

A SERIES OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR FARMERS, HOMEOWNERS, GARDENERS AND YOUTH.

Cherokee and Graham County Centers have teamed together to offer a series of Farm School educational programs that will help farmers, homeowners, gardeners and youth learn more about farming, agriculture and rural living in our area. Most workshops are free to anyone who would like to register. However, there is a charge for the grafting workshop to help cover the cost of the materials. If you have any questions about our programs, feel free to contact us.

Spring will be here very soon, and and many of us will begin our annual Spring cleaning! In partnership with the Local Government Credit Union (LGFCU), the North Carolina Cooperative Extension  – Cherokee County Center is excited to invite you to our Spring Clean Out Day! The event will be held on March 22nd, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will be located at our meeting room location at 699 Connahetta Street, Murphy (the rock gym parking area).

4-H Horse Club Competes
at the District Horse Bowl
The Cherokee County 4-H Horse Club participated in the West District 4-H Horse Bowl competition on February 11, at the Tryon International Equestrian Center, Mill Spring, NC. Club members that competed were Bella Hedden, Rebecca Carver, Rachel Carver, Eliana Meiners, and Eliza Meiners. Their coaches/4-H club volunteers are Erika Hedden and Amy Meiners.

How to Become a
4-H Member in
Cherokee County!!
Cherokee County currently has four active 4-H Clubs. All of our clubs are open to youth ages 5-18 except for our Cherokee On The Fly 4-H Club. It is open to grades 6-12. All of our 4-H clubs are free to enroll in. If there is no club that your child is interested in please give us a call and we will talk to you about other ways to be involved in 4-H. Or if you would like to start a 4-H club we would love to have new 4-H adult volunteers.

The Bunnies, Bovines, Bees & Birds
4-H Club will hold their next monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 7th at 6:30pm at 699 Conaheeta Street, Murphy, NC.

The Hiwassee Dam Soaring Eagles 4-H & Modern Woodmen Club will meet on March 21st from 3pm - 4:30pm in Debbie Sander's Classroom.  Ages 5-18 are welcome!

The Cherokee County 4-H Horse Club will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 14th at 6:30pm at 699 Conaheeta Street, Murphy, NC.


The Cherokee County Master Gardeners will hold their monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at 699 Conaheeta Street, Murphy, NC.

Cherokee on the Fly 4-H Club  will hold their next meeting on Thursday, March 2nd and again on March 16th at 3:30pm-5:30pm at 699 Conaheeta Street,  Murphy, NC.
