March 2023
Happy March!

Over the past month, our weather has been unseasonably warm. Despite not yet being spring, our plants seem to have begun blooming. However, the weather is a great reminder to prepare for spring planting. Extension always has soil sample boxes available. Soil sampling can help you determine the soil's condition and nutrients. There are educational sheets to help you with collecting samples. Of course, we are always here to assist you with the process. Boxes are available in the front foyer during and after business hours.

There are a lot of activities underway, as you will see in the newsletter. Agents have been busy planning and scheduling their Spring and Summer events. You can stay up to date through our website and social media.

To add to the topic of planning, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our Advisory Leadership Council. We have an excellent group of people with a diverse range of experience and expertise. In addition to ensuring that Extension's programming meets our local needs, this group markets the impact of our programs and advocates on Extension's behalf. We can expect a great deal of impact on our community from the ideas and activities of this group.

And finally, I wanted to share NC State Extension's Strategic Plan which was recently released. We are excited to align our programming with Extension's strategic plan as well as the County.

As always, we welcome your feedback and encourage you to contact us if you have any questions.

AGRICULTURE
Congratulations Kim Woods

Congratulations to our very own Livestock Agent, Kim Woods, and her husband on their hard work.
Chad and Kim Woods of Spring Crest Farm received
the NC Environmental Stewardship Award at the NC Cattlemen's Association Annual Conference.

Beef producers use their management skills to convert natural resources into a healthy food product. To be successful in the long run, it is in our best interest to be good stewards of the land we manage. There has been an increased awareness about human impact on the environment, and the beef industry has initiatives at all levels to improve environmental stewardship.

This award is just one more effort to improve environmental awareness of beef producers and to educate the general public about environmental efforts of the beef industry.
There are many examples of environmental stewardship among North Carolina cattlemen. The North Carolina Cattlemen’s Association, the North Carolina Forage and Grassland Council, and Merck Animal Health have teamed up to recognize innovative environmental stewards in North Carolina’s beef industry with an Environmental Stewardship Award. The award is meant to recognize innovative cattlemen and to provide positive examples and ideas for conservation practices that can be easily implemented by North Carolina beef producers.
