HOWLING WITH CALS SUMMER CAMP FOR RISING 9TH GRADERS
June 11-14 | Apply by April 17th
________________________________

We are accepting applications until April 17 and families will be notified shortly thereafter.
The Howling with CALS Camp is a 4-day residential camp (June 11-14, 2023) for a small group of rising high-school freshmen from rural North Carolina counties or underrepresented communities to reside on North Carolina State University’s campus to learn more about opportunities within agriculture and life sciences.

From meeting our dairy cows and having a taste of howling cow ice cream to propagating weird and wonderful plants, this week promises a lot of fun discovery. We are seeking students who are interested in learning more about agriculture and life sciences disciplines, have a passion for making a difference, and understanding the science behind these fields, and participating in hands-on learning.

This is a grant-funded opportunity. Eligible and selected campers do not need to pay a registration or camper fee (travel costs to and from NC State’s campus not included). Our goal is to expose young people to many of the academic, career, and professional opportunities within our College, and to support them even further in thinking through preparing to be a successful and well-balanced high school student ready to apply to college in the future. Campers will be led by camp counselors through a number of different activities during their stay on campus.

Applications are open now! Click here to Apply.

Please contact our Camp Planning Team at cals_recruiting@ncsu.edu with any questions.

THE NC 4-H EMPOWERING YOUTH & FAMILIES PROGRAM (EYFP)
SPRING 2023
________________________________

A family leadership program for middle school youth and their caregivers. Participating families attend 10 weekly sessions in their county and a “Confluence” family retreat. Each session has been carefully designed to address the unique needs of youth, caregivers, and families, and each includes fun team building activities, a sit-down family meal, and social time with other families in the program.

At the end of the program, families put their new skills into practice. Together with other local EYFP families, they organize and host a community-wide healthy living event to share their learning and take concrete steps in their community to prevent opioid-related deaths among teens.

EYFP has been implemented since 2017 in multiple formats: in-person, hybrid, and virtually throughout the state. To further increase our outreach, we are going to continue in-person programming within multiple counties and announce our new state-wide virtual program for the Spring!

For more information on EYFP and its current programming, please visit our website at https://eyfp4h.org/.

Entries Due April 21

Calling all young creative writers who love honey bees! Enrolled North Carolina 4-H youth are invited to research and write an essay for the state 4-H Beekeeping Essay contest.
The 2023 essay topic is, “The Importance of Beeswax.” Although honey bees are much beloved for honey, bees also produce beeswax that can be used in many ways. For this essay, a 4-H youth should discuss why beeswax is so important to the hive (it’s a pantry, it’s a nursery, it’s the dance floor), but also discuss their favorite way to use beeswax outside the hive. Photos of candles, soaps, or lip balms that are made to show the 4-H’er’s skill in using beeswax are welcomed as are recipes or brief instructions.
All essays are due by Friday, April 21st, 2023 and should be submitted here. Read more about this program or contact NC 4-H Entomology Specialist, Liz Driscoll at liz_driscoll@ncsu.edu | (919) 886-3424.
