Livestock Club Interest Meeting

Does your child like animals, but you aren't ready to start your own livestock projects at home? The Yancey County 4-H Livestock Club has a great new opportunity for youth to learn more about livestock species, without having to own an animal! Join us on Monday, April 24th at 4:00pm for an interest meeting about this club.

Livestock skillathon provides youth opportunities to learn about multiple livestock species and work with animals, but not have the large time commitment of owning and caring for an animal. Youth will compete as a team on a variety of livestock related topics. Some of these topics include anatomy and breeds of an animal, feed used in an animal diet, wholesale and retail cuts of meat derived from an animal, and production and management of animals. Livestock species studied include swine, sheep, goats and beef.

Meetings
1st & 3rd Mondays of each month from 4:00-5:00pm
@ Yancey Extension Office
Additional farm days, clinics and competitions as announced!

Open to youth ages 8 and up!

The 2023 WNC Dairy Beef Feeder Steer Project kicked off on Saturday, April 1st! Two of our Yancey 4-H Beef Club members received their calves, learned about proper nutrition and fed their first of many bottles! Over the next few months, these youth will learn how to care for, raise and show their calves. This all leads up to the final event of the youth showing them in the WNC Mountain State Fair. After the fair, the calves are sold and youth receive the money from the sale.

Would your child be interested in participating in this project? Annual registration happens in February, so be on the lookout in 2024!
