N.C. Cooperative Extension-McDowell County Center’s Keep McDowell Beautiful program will be coordinating the annual Lake James Clean Up on Saturday, May 6, from 8 a.m. to noon. We invite everyone to remove litter from Lake James and its shoreline. Volunteers with boats, canoes, kayaks, and on foot will be needed. Volunteers who do not own boats are needed for clean up crews.

Keeping with the theme of Salsa Month, have you ever wondered if your favorite Salsa recipe is safe to can and have later in the year? It really depends on the recipe. One thing we do know, is you can not preserve fresh salsa. You can make a canned Salsa recipe that is shelf stable.
4-H Livestock Club Meeting
Youth ages 5-18, who are interested in becoming involved in a 4-H Youth Livestock program, are invited to attend the upcoming McDowell County 4-H Livestock Club interest meeting. Learn about current opportunities in 4-H Youth Livestock programs. The meeting is May 4, 6 p.m.
Our 2023 Summer Discovery program is now finalized! Each summer, McDowell 4-H invites youth to participate in our summer program that is one day educational field trips. Registration is May 17 starting at 1 p.m. at the Extension Office. Classes fill quickly.

The West District 4-H District Activity Day will be held on Friday, June 16 at Chase High School in Rutherford County. District Activity Day is where 4-Hers from across the district gather to share a presentation on one of their 4-H projects or a topic they are interested in.
Each year, McDowell 4-H works with 2nd grade classrooms in McDowell to offer 4-H Embryology Project for school enrichment. We got the eggs from Biltmore Farms and are able to sell the chicks. If you would like to purchase freshly hatched chicks, please call Chad at 828-652-8104.
