2023 Presentation Competition

It is that time of year again, 4-H Presentation time! This is a fun event where youth can share skills, knowledge, and excitement about their 4-H project or anything they are interested in. Public speaking is one of the TOP skills that 4-H alumni say they have learned through the 4-H program that they have used in their college and adult life.

2023 4-H Fishing Day

Our 2023 4-H Fishing Day will be Saturday, May 13th at Toe River Campground! Registration starts at 7:30am
and fishing starts at 8am until 11am.
- Open to Ages 15 & under! Youth do NOT have to be a 4-H member to participate
- Youth 15 and under do not have to have a fishing license
- Bring your fishing pole, bait, chair & bucket
2023 4-H Summer Fun

Yancey County 4-H is excited to offer a wide variety of summer learning opportunities for youth in 2023! Space is limited for each camp, so register early to reserve your spot!

You're Invited: Longshots Fun Shoot & Cookout!

Are you interested in our Yancey Longshots 4-H Club but are on the club waitlist or missed the registration deadline for 2023? If so, this event is for you! The club will host a fun shoot and cookout on Thursday, May 11th from 5:30-8:00pm. This event is open to all 4-H members. Youth DO NOT have to be a 2023 Longshots member to participate. At this event, youth can learn about firearm safety, enjoy some food and get some range time! @ Yancey Mitchell Landfill Range (555 Landfill Rd, Burnsville, NC).

Adults, We Need Your Help!

Yancey County 4-H is currently seeking volunteers to help with the following 4-H programs:

-Co-leader for a new fitness club
-Leader for a new cooking club
-Volunteer to teach summer art workshops

If you would be interested in helping with any of these opportunities, please contact Jordan for more information. Time commitments vary, but are generally around 5-10 hours per month. Potential 4-H volunteers must pass reference and background checks.

4-H News: Longshots Compete in the State Wildlife Competition!

On Saturday, April 29th the Yancey County 4-H Longshots team competed in the State Youth Hunter Education Skills Tournament in Ellerbe, NC. Twelve 4-H Longshots members represented Yancey County at the tournament, with over 600 youth from across the State competing. Hunter Geouge, Hudson Hilliard, Hunter Wilson, Becca Carroll, Isaac Miller, Macy Carroll, Bradley Jeffords, Morgan Carroll, Liam Ayers, Makenna Carroll, Sam Gantt and Jonathan Riddle made up the 2023 YHEST team. The tournament consisted of four disciplines: Rifle, Shotgun, Archery and Hunting Skills. Congratulations to the Longshots team for making it to the State competition!
4-H News: 2023 Volunteer Appreciation Banquet

On Friday, April 21st, Yancey County 4-H held our annual 4-H Volunteer Appreciation Banquet. At this event, we recognize our 4-H volunteers for all of the hard work and time they dedicate to Yancey County 4-H. 4-H Volunteers are the backbone of the 4-H program. Our volunteers provide the guidance and support that helps nearly 200 4-H members ages 5-18 in Yancey County.

Yancey County 4-H currently has 22 volunteers who help make our program possible. Austin Wilson, Joe Pate, Clay Carroll, Jeff Fox, Mark Geouge, Shane Hilliard and Levi Johnson are our Longshots Shooting Sports Club volunteers. Connie McMahan, Gigi Kay and Reba Mathis are our Sewing Club volunteers. Kimberly Montgomery and JJ Wise are our Arts & Crafts Club volunteers. Lynn Austin and April McCurry are our Beef Club volunteers. Amber Hammond and Leah Edwards are our Livestock Club volunteers. Kevin Gantt is our Outdoor Adventures Club volunteers. Abigail Varney and Kevin Gantt are our Electric Group volunteers. Michelle Burke, Christina Johnson and Kayti Ledford are our Lego Club volunteers. Kady Gantt and Kevin Gantt are our Rabbit Club volunteers. Chastity Sprinkle is our Horse Club volunteer. Without the selfless work of these volunteers, all of these programs would not be possible! The work of 4-H volunteers is continuous. Everyday a volunteer is lending a helping hand to provide learning opportunities for the 4-H members involved in the Yancey County 4-H Program. The next time you see one of our volunteers, be sure to thank them for all they do for Yancey County 4-H!

Yancey County 4-H is excited to announce our new text reminder system! This system will be use to send out text reminders for upcoming meetings and events. You will only receive messages for clubs and events your child is involved in. You must complete the sign up form below to opt-in and receive messages. We still have a few Yancey County 4-H T-shirts available for sale at the Extension Office! The shirts are $15 each and we have sizes Youth Large - Adult 3XL remaining. We accept cash or check (made to Yancey County 4-H).
