Happy May!
5 years ago I started my career as the Rowan County 4-H Agent! Time surely flies! Thank you for being a part of 4-H and a part of my life! I appreciate all of you!
We have LOTS of upcoming events, fundraisers, and camps/conferences and opportunities. It's going to be a fun and busy summer!
This newsletter includes:

Upcoming Meetings
County Council: for youth ages 12-18 years old as of January 1
-Next County Council meeting: -Tuesday, May 4 from 5:15-6:30 PM at Tractor Supply in Salisbury (we will be collecting donations during Paper Clover Week)
PALS: These meetings are for any parent, alumni, leader or supporter of Rowan County 4-H. If you are interested in 4-H or new to 4-H, you are invited to attend these meetings as well! Please come share your ideas for 4-H and help us find ways to support Rowan County 4-H.
-Next PALS meeting: Monday, June 12 at 7 PM on Zoom

Paper Clover Week at Tractor Supply
April 26-May 7, 2023
Help us raise money for 4-H by working a shift at Tractor Supply in Salisbury! 100% of the money raised goes to 4-H, with 90% of the donations from the Salisbury store coming back to Rowan County 4-H!

Most classes filled up within the first 30 minutes to an hour of registration being open. We have 3 classes that still have openings. First come, first served. Click below to see what's still available.

Rowan County information regarding 4-H Congress:
-register no later than Friday, May 19, 2023 -contact laura_allen@ncsu.edu to register
-limited to 14 youth participants ages 13-18 (as of Jan 1)
-we will leave on Friday, July 21 (time TBD) and return on Tuesday, July 25
-registration cost for NC 4-H is $250....but I only charge $175 per child
-6 meals will be covered for you and you will get a t-shirt; you will need to bring breakfast items (granola bars, fruit, etc) for breakfast each day and then will have to pay for other meals not covered -we will be staying on NC State's campus in dorms

4-H Shout Outs
-Congratulations to the Rowan County 4-H senior division Dairy Judging Team who competed in the NC 4-H Dairy Judging contest on April 14. This team placed 1st in the state! Team members include: Brinley Batts, Kennedy Clawson,Talton Correll, Sarah Waller.
-On April 21, Rowan County 4-H held our annual County Activity Day. At this event, 4-H’ers participated in 4-H presentations, talent, and expressive arts competitions and events.
4-H Presentation participants included: Sadie Allen, Cloverbud (5-7 years), “Frogs” Maggie Deal, Cloverbud (5-7 years), “The Real Deal on Chickens” Rosalie Wells, Cloverbud (5-7 years), “Three Cool Horses” Luke Allen, 8-10 years, Arts & Communication, "Maps" John Tucker, 8-10 years, Agricultural Science (Crops), "Drones in Agriculture” David Croyle, 11-13 years, Open Class, "Minecraft v/s Real Life: What you can learn from playing Minecraft" Guy Deal, 11-13 years, Public Speaking, "Water, the Cycle of Life" Nathan Croyle, 14-18 years, Family & Consumer Sciences, "Sewing with Innovation" Mason Gabosch, 14-18 years, Open Class, "Evolution of the ‘Stick and String’" German Jaramillo, 14-18 years, Fisheries & Aquatics, "A Look into the Life of Otters" Samantha Simon, 14-18 years, Poultry, "Quail vs. Chickens" Olivia Stirrup, 14-18 years, Egg Chef Challenge, "Scrambled Eggs 101" Lucas Weeder, 14-18 years, Ocean Liners vs. Cruise Ships
Outdoor Cookery participants included: Carson Halpin, 11-13 years, Beef Char-Grilling Christian Stebe (pork char-grilling, 14-18 year olds) and Bonnie Goossens (beef char-grilling, 14-18 year olds) were unable to attend our April 21 event but did their presentations on May 1 instead.
All of the above youth qualify for District Activity Day on June 17.

-Congratulations to John Tucker for having the winning 8-10 year old NC 4-H Beekeeping Essay! He will receive a $25 award.

What is a 4-H Project?
Achievement Plan (Have your child fill out this form annually and add to it to document their 4-H experience and to get recognized at Achievement Night. This will also be helpful for 4-H awards & college scholarships in the future!)

Participate in AIRE to gain GREAT skills that you need for upcoming college/scholarship applications and jobs AND the opportunity to go on a national level 4-H trip!
Here are the details:
- AIRE (Application, Interview, Resume, Essay) is open to any 4-H member ages 11 - 18. This program is how NC 4-H selects delegates to attend National 4-H Trips.
- The NEW AIRE Prep-Packet is located on the NC 4-H Website.
- AIRE Registration is open until June 5th.
- Registration has 2 steps: 1): Youth register to participate in 4-HOnline, then 2) complete the Google Uploads form (Via the QR code).
- Participants register in 4-HOnline. *County Approval is required. Please look for these under your Registrations Tab.
- The Google Uploads form requires a "Gmail" account. *The registration instructions ask youth who do not have a Gmail account to coordinate their submission with their 4-H Agent.
- If you want MRS. LAURA TO LOOK OVER YOUR APPLICATION, I need it to me no later than May 22.
- Only registered participants will receive the information to sign up for an Interview slot.

Club Reports:
Hot Shots 4-H Club, submitted by club leader Beth Stebe:
The Hots Shots 4-H Club met in March for their second annual Shamrock Shoot. We had 14 team members participating. We had 3 divisions: Novice, Junior, and Senior. The members had their choice of either Open or Telescopic class.
Our top winner in Jr Division was Georgia Veleke and the Sr Division top winner was Addyson Lynch. All of our Novice Division received a small trophy.

Rowan 4-H Volunteer Reporting for 2023
If you are registered as a 4-H Volunteer in 4-HOnline it is super important that you report your hours and contacts! This greatly assists Laura with her Extension reports every year, since your hours and contacts must be reported!
Please go to go.ncsu.edu/2023monthly4hreportrowan and complete your reports. Reports are due 10 days after the end of each month (January contacts due by Feb. 10). Email reminders will be sent to those who should be completing reports. It should only take about 5 minutes!
