District Activity Day

District Activity Day registration is due
May 30th. If you would like to participate in presentations or 4-H Entertains contest please let DJ Salyer, 4-H Agent, know ASAP. dj_salyer@ncsu.edu

District Activity Day (DAD) is a 4-H Presentation public speaking competition for youth to present information on the topic of their choice. 4-H Presentations are a huge part of North Carolina 4-H. It is one of the most successful way to help a young person learn how to do a public speech. It focuses on members teaching others what they know about a particular project/subject matter. They are sometimes called demonstrations or illustrated talk or a formal speech. The speech/presentation should be between 5 and 12 minutes. District winners compete at the state level. State winners in sponsored categories receive cash awards! In specific categories, the State-winning seniors may go on to compete at the National level.
Programming in Alexander County

NC Cooperative Extension-Alexander County held Wake Up to Ag for all 1st graders in Alexander County on Friday, April 28th.  Kids were able to learn what agriculture is and how important it is to everyone.  A special thank you to the Alexander Central High School FFA Chapter for coming to help out for the day and leading the stations, all the farmers that brought animals for the kids to see and for H&H Arena for accommodating us.
Alexander County 4-H Clubs

Alexander County Livestock 4-H Club
met in April at the park for a social event.   The club will now be taking the summer off and will regroup in August.

Alexander County 4-H Garden Club met in April to learn about how soils are formed, what our different soil layers are, and how different soils filter water differently. One of the experiments we conducted demonstrated how clay soils can filter out green food coloring from colored water, whereas sandy soils did not. The group also learned about erosion and why it is important to have healthy plant material rather than bare soils. Of course we had to make our very own edible soil layers as well….(or I guess maybe one giant layer of sugar haha!). Our 4-H Garden Club also planted some gourds for a long-term project of making birdhouses out of the gourds eventually!!

If you are interested in having your kids join our 4-H Garden Club, please send me an email at cari_mitchell@ncsu.edu and feel free to join us at our next meeting on May 11th at 5:30pm!

Southern Grace 4-H Club met in April to make starter sewing kit boxes and practiced hand sewing.  They made needle case "books" and sewed on buttons to make different design covers.  At this time Southern Grace is not accepting new members.

Shockers 4-H Electric Club met on Tuesday, April 17, 2023.  Members worked on their soldering skills and trouble shooting on laser target kit.  Our next meeting will be May 16, 2023 at 6:30p.m. at the Alexander County Service Center. New members are welcome to attend!

Whisk it Up 4-H Cooking Club met in April to learn how to make freezer jam.  Members baked biscuits from scratch then learned the process of how to make their own strawberry jam.  The next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 27 at 4:00 p.m.  New members are welcome!

WHEP (Wildlife Habitat Education Program)

The Whep Team will have their final practice of the season May 3rd for all last minute preparations for the state contest on May 6th. Alexander County 4-H will be well represented at the contest with 4 individuals. The senior individuals will include Weston Brown & Grace Bass. The junior individuals are Allie Millsaps and Blake Bass.
