4-H County Council Meeting

The 4-H County Council will meet promptly at 5:30 p.m. on May 23. Everyone is welcome to attend: parents, youth and volunteers.

When: Tuesday, May 23 at 5:30 p.m.

4-H Booth at Kiwanis Club Family Event

The Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville will be hosting a kids/family event on Sunday, June 25, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Kiwanis has requested that Cumberland County 4-H set up an informational table to promote 4-H.

Are there any clubs or volunteers that would like to work the table and answer questions about 4-H?  The event will be held outdoors at the Kiwanis Recreation Center and Honeycutt Park at 352 Devers Street.

Upcoming Youth Livestock Events

NC 4-H Livestock has several new and exciting opportunities for youth interested in Livestock Judging, Skillathon, and Quiz Bowl . Click here for more information.

What: Advanced Skillathon Clinic
When: May 27,2023
Who: Youth 14-19 that have a strong interest in competing in the National Skillathon Contest.  This will be a one day intensive training to help prepare youth for all aspects of a skillathon event.
Where: E Carroll Joyner Beef Education Unit, Raleigh NC


What: Lenoir Livestock Contest
When: June 3, 2023
Who: Youth ages 8 - 19. This is a Skillathon and Quiz Bowl Competition.
Where: Lenoir County Livestock Arena, Kinston NC


What: Advanced Livestock Judging Clinic
When: June 12-16
Who: Youth 14-19 that have a strong passion to judge livestock.  We will be traveling across Virginia and West Virginia visiting multiple farms and working on oral reasons.  Youth should have some prior experience before participating.  Only the top 10 youth that apply will be selected to participate.
Where: Multiple farms across Virginia and West Virginia


What: Locust Hill Cattle Livestock Judging Contest
When: June 16, 2023
Who: Youth under the age of 19.  This will be a cattle only livestock judging contest.  It will consist of 8 classes of cattle, 2 sets of questions and 1 set of reasons for all participants.
Where: Locust Hill Cattle Company, 1434 Dibrell Rd, Pelham, NC 27311


What: Livestock Skillathon & Judging Clinic
When: June 27 - Skillathon and June 28 - Livestock Judging
Who: Any youth 8-19 that would like to learn more about the livestock industry and in particular these two events.  These events are designed for beginners.
Where: E Carroll Joyner Beef Education Unit, Raleigh NC


What: Jammin June
When: Updated date from previous to June 30
Who: Youth ages 8 - 19. This is a Skillathon and Quiz Bowl Competition.
Where: Chatham County Ag Center, Pittsboro NC

What : NC Sheep & Goat Roundup (New Event)
When: July 13-16
Who:  This event will be open to NC residents only.  This event will include market lamb, breeding ewe, market goat, breeding doe, and showmanship classes.  Additionally, we plan to have other educational contests such as public speaking, graphic design, livestock judging, and others.  More information to come.
Where: Carolina Classic Fairgrounds, Winston-Salem, NC

What: State 4-H Livestock Contests
When: July 26-28
Who: Youth ages 8-19.  This is our State 4-H Skillathon, Quiz Bowl, and Livestock Judging Contests.  We will also have an awards dinner on Friday evening at the McKimmon Center.
Where: NC State University (Riddick Hall, E Carroll Joyner Beef Education Unit, McKimmon Center)

What: Supreme Skillathon Championship
When: This will be a culmination of scores from 7 different contests throughout North Carolina.  Youth will be allowed to drop their two lowest scores.  We will have three age divisions just like the State 4-H Contests.  The top Individuals will be recognized at the 2024 NC Cattlemen's Conference. More information is attached to this email.

Great Southeast Pollinator Census

Would you like to help scientist understand what kind of insects are in your backyard, this is the project for you!

For those in North Carolina who are excited to participate in the census for the first time, sign up for our June 7 webinar that will have you counting insects and ready for August.

When: Wednesday, June 7, 2023
Time: 1:30 - 3:00 p.m.
Where: Zoom (link to be sent out day before)
Who: Anyone in NC! Citizens, Extension Master Gardeners, schools, teachers, students, parents, homeschool groups, businesses, non-profits, government organizations, etc.

7-County 4-H Master Volunteer Training

Join 4-H volunteers from Bladen, Brunswick, Cumberland, Hoke, Moore, New Hanover, and Robeson Counties for the Master Volunteer Training. You will have the opportunity to choose attending virtual or in person. Dinner will be included for those attending in person.

Everyone attending, whether in-person or virtual, is asked to register at this link in Eventbrite, this way we will have a count for dinner and also be able to send you the zoom link if you choose virtual. Eventbrite will have topic descriptions.

Dr. Kim Ingold 4-H Photography Contest

The Dr. Kim Ingold 4-H Photography Contest is a statewide annual contest that highlights North Carolina 4-H'ers photographic achievements. The winning photos will be premiered during the National 4-H Week and displayed on the North Carolina 4-H Photography Contest website.

There is a new photography category, Special Effects and a new age division, Adult Division, 19+ as of 1/1 this year.

Please see the attached letter that details information that will make your enrollment and re-enrollment much easier. If you were enrolled in the system last year, you will not have to set up a brand new account. Your login information is the same. Please reach out if you need assistance or need your password reset.

Adults, please note that in the information transfer many of our volunteers and adult birthdates were changed. Unfortunately, you will need to go in and add your actual date of birth.

Also note that you will need to determine a club affiliation in order for your
application to go through. If you are not in a particular club, please select
Member at Large (Cumberland County).

Please refer to the letter attached and contact the 4-H office if you have any questions.
