Extension News Currituck County

July 2021
We at the Currituck County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension would like to wish you all a happy and safe Independence Day!

You'll likely be enjoying some quality beach, boating or general outside time so be sure you check out our information on sun safety. Fourth of July weekend is also one of the most popular times to grill out so be sure you keep things food safe with this information from our friends at NC State Extension's Safe Plates Program.

Perhaps you'll be grilling up or cooking some of the first fruits from your home garden. You might like to try our grilled okra or the delicious grilled street corn recipe we shared at last year's online fair. Or if you prefer to prepare your festive fare in the kitchen, take a look at this basil shrimp and tomato pasta recipe or try your hand at our creole jambalaya.

Be sure to stay up to date with all the latest classes and publications on our website, Eventbrite site, YouTube channel, and follow @CurrituckCES on social media outlets.

Garden Irrigation

The summer is heating up and watering our gardens is a must. While watering a garden may seem simple, improper irrigation can increase disease incidence as well as nutrient loss.

Luckily, N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center has a free class to tackle this issue. Join us at the Currituck County Extension Office, 120 Community Way Barco, on July 7, 2021, from 10 a.m. to noon as we continue our summer gardening series with everything you need to know about irrigation.
4-H Trip to Merchant's Millpond

Join us for a fun-filled trip to Merchants Millpond State Park in Gatesville, NC on Saturday, August 7, 2021. “The scenic pond is surrounded by picnic grounds, nine miles of hiking trails, and a visitor center offering museum-quality exhibits.” We will enjoy canoeing through the millpond, as well as an education program presented by the rangers. This program is for all youth ages 10 to 15. The cost for this program is only $5.00.
