Beginning Sewing Class - Make a Pillowcase

Tuesday August 1st from 10:00 - 3:00

Bring a lunch, bring your creativity and learn a fun new skill.  This class is for ages 8 - 18. This is a short notice class due to the timing of our newsletter.  Please email or call 828-349-2226 by 8:30 Tuesday morning.  We have a limited number of spaces.




Do You Know About the WNC Pony Express?



Each year the Mountain State Fair send out a Pony Express van to pick up arts and crafts entries from our counties.  That saves you a trip if you would like to enter arts, crafts, woodworking, garden items, etc. in our regional fair.  How does it work?  You go onto the MSF website and register your entries.  They you bring them to the Cooperative Extension office boxed up and protected.  The Pony Express will come pick them up and deliver them back here after the fair.  You will want to go visit the fair (of course) to see how your item placed!!

Go check out the Mountain State Fair website: (www.wncagcenter.org/p/mountainstatefair) for a description of each category. The Youth Department is for youth ages 6 to 19.  A separate category is "Participation" and that is for kids 5 and under.

Help Needed for the 4-H Booth at the Franklin Area Folk Festival

Macon County 4-H will have a booth at the Folk Festival on Saturday August 19th.  We will be demonstrating traditional Appalachian toys and making button tops 

If you would like to come help, please sign up below.  Our goat club will also be there beside us with animals.  It will be a fun day,  If you can help for a 2 hour block, please let us know.



Youth Summer Livestock Series

The Youth Summer Livestock Series is for youth in Macon, Jackson, Swain, Haywood, Clay, Cherokee and Graham Counties.You do not have to own an animal to participate. Learn from volunteers and seasoned youth showman the proper techniques for raising and showing livestock.

We still have two Clinic night: August 10th and August 24th

Light supper at 6:00pm and clinic at 6:30 pm.  Please let us know the day before each clinic if you would like to join us for supper.

2023 - 2024 Beef Project Starting in August

Have you always wanted to know what was involved in raising a show beef steer.  Macon 4-H is starting it's 2023 - 2024 season in August.  If you have the time, energy and dedication to learn; Macon 4-H has a steer for you to raise.

Club Corner
Macon Mountain Goats 4-H Club

This summer the Macon Mountain Goat club hosted 84 youth from the school summer program.  This month MMG will meet on Tuesday August 8th at 6:00 pm.  Please make sure you email Ms. Cindy or Tammara with your t-shirt size if you will be showing in the Macon County Fair.
Macon Archers

We have 9 archers going to the West District 4-H Tournament on August 12th.  If you would like to help set up, please meet at the Polk County Gun Club at noon on August 11th.  We will meet at 8:30 at Poik County Gun Club on the day of the tournament.

Note: The State Tournament Date is set for September 30th
Macon Sharp Shooters

We have 7 shooters that will compete at the West District Shooting 4-H Shooting tournament on August 12th.  If you would like to help set up, please meet at the Polk County Gun Club at noon on August 11th.  We will meet at 8:30am at Polk County Gun Club on the day of the

Our regular monthly meetings will be on Saturday August 19th and 26th.

Note: The State 4-H Shooting Tournament date is set for September 30th.
Budding Chefs and Top Chefs


We will get back to work in September after school is back in session.  Bring your ideas to our first meeting of the fall.

Sassy Stitchers

Our first meeting of the fall will be on Thursday August 31st at 3:45.  Both our beginners group and our advanced group will be taking a field trip to a fabric store to look at  different types of fabric and tools.

This fall, we will have 3 classes:
1. Our advanced group will meet the last two Thursdays of the month from 3:45 - 6:00.  This is for 4-Hers that have sewed with our group this past year.

2. We will a beginners group that meets from 3:45 until 6:00 on the first two Thursdays of each month

3. We will also have a beginners group that meets from 2:00 until 3:45 the last two Thursdays of each month. 

If you are a beginners that has been waiting for an opportunity to get into the sewing group, here is your opportunity with two different time slots.  All of these group are for ages 8 and up.  Please call Pam  or Tammara at 349-2046 to get your name on one of these lists.


4-H Market Lamb Club

See our above schedule in the livestock clinic area.  Our dates are August 10th and August 24th at the Fairgrounds. 

We will also be showing at the Swain County Fair on Saturday August 19th. Make sure Joe knows if you are interested in showing at Swain County.

4-H WHEP (Wildlife Habitat Educational Program)

Thanks you to Ms. Janis Brannon for visiting our WHEP group to talk about reptiles.  She brought a beautiful snake for us to see and learn about.  We also had a fun time learning about compasses and going on a treasure hunt with our new skills.

This month our meeting times will be different due to time conflicts on our typical night.  We will meet on Tuesday August 22nd and Tuesday August 29th at 5:30.  Watch your email for activity directions.

Macon 4-H Beekeepers

This month we will bottle our honey and get it ready to take home.  We will also sell honey to help fund our take home hives for the spring of 2024.  Our meeting times will be different that usual this month due to schedule conflicts.

We will meet at the Cooperative Extension Office on Wednesday August 16th at 5:30

We will also meet on Wednesday August 23rd at the bee yard to do mite counts.
