Summer Opportunities Recap

Kids in the Kitchen

Summer Fun 2021 launched with our cloverbuds joining us in the kitchen. Kids in the Kitchen introduced our 5-8 year old campers to basic cooking skills. Campers taste tested various fruits, made their very own dip to pair with the fruit, and learned about fruits/vegetables they had never heard of before. Campers learned to measure out ingredients and follow basic recipes. Using their skills, campers made their very own homemade cookies and pizza!

Rocky Face Hiking Adventures
Our 4-Hers explored a local beauty here in Alexander County. Rocky Face Park offers a vast array of educational opportunities for 4-Hers. Campers learned about species native to our own county and the surrounding area. After hiking the trails and reaching the summit, 4-Hers were able to hear from the Park Ranger at Rocky Face to learn about natural camouflage and wildlife on the mountain.

Fishing Adventures
4-Hers spent the day fishing Ellendale Pond. Campers learned the importance of safety around bodies of water while having fun and learning about fishing strategy. 4-H agent, DJ Salyer, taught campers about the dangers of hypothermia through an ice bucket demonstration. After the demonstration, 4-H campers grabbed their fishing poles for a day of fishing. Almost all of our campers caught at least one fish!

Subscription Boxes
For the month of June, our Subscription box participants received their very own rocketry kit. Participants received supplies to make a stomp rocket that can safely be launched at their home and an Estes Rocket! The Estes Rocket will be returned to the 4-H office for us to launch safely. Join our Facebook live event on July 16th at 10am to watch the launch!

Eastern Center 4-H Camp
This year for our annual week long 4-H camp we traveled to the coast to attend a week of camp at the Eastern 4-H center. We had a blast enjoying lots of activities including rock climbing, kayaking in the sound, crabbing, crafts, archery, field games, and more. Alexander County's own Lee Julian won the award for most knowledgeable camper. 4-H Camp is a great experience for youth, as they learn life skills to last a lifetime as well as have an amazing time.
