HIGH TUNNEL PRODUCTION

High Tunnel production is an emerging type of Controlled Environment Agriculture that is very closely related to greenhouse production, but less expensive regarding initial start-up costs and overhead. The structures are similar in design but differ in hardware such as heaters and evaporative cooling systems. They are often referred to as Hoop Houses or Tunnel greenhouses, covered with a single layer of poly plastic for protection. High-Tunnel production provides the grower a cost-effective choice to improve their outdoor operations without the hassle of constructing a permanent structure such as a traditional greenhouse. Another benefit is that high yield production can be reached on a minimal amount of land.

Avery A&H Fair Board along with Mitchell County Cooperative Extension invite you to attend the educational and family friendly Avery A&H Fair Annual Draft Horse Pull and in Newland, NC September 2nd, 2023. This is an opportunity to commune with family and friends and learn about Avery and Mitchell Counties’ history while watching huge draft horses do what they are bred for and love. This is a family friendly event that will be accompanied by local vendors and concessions. Please bring your own chair for comfort and join us for a fun filled day that will kick off the Avery A&H Fair the following week, September 6th – 9th, 2023.

Free Quilt Classes and Community Quilt Kits
The new ECA Quilt Club continues partnership with Mitchell Quilt Resource Center, which offers free quilting classes!

This month: Janice Jackson is teaching Fused Applique September 19th and 26th, Tuesday evenings from 6-7:30
                    Kathy Woehler is teaching English Paper Piecing September 20th and 27th,       Wednesday afternoons from 2-3:30
                    Craig Mauney is joining us for a Natural Dyes Forage Walk Monday September 25th from 11-2 PM

The ECA Quilt Club is open to all. They meet the first Wednesday of each month at 1:30 pm at the Mitchell Senior Center in Ledger.
Currently, the Quilt Club is working on it's first community project, a quilt for a resident of the Mitchell House.

Youth Voice

Bransen Pittman and Connor Miller traveled to Raleigh to attend the 12th annual YouthVoice conference. There were 72 people from 57 counties for this awesome event. YouthVoice was held Friday-Saturday, August 26 - 27, at the Raleigh Convention Center in downtown Raleigh.


           
 
4-H Online Enrollment is Open

All 4-H members, leaders and parents must re-enroll for the 2023 year to participate in 4-H opportunities.  In addition, if you are new to the program and want to participate in any 4-H events, activities, or programs, please go register in 4-H online.
