Yancey County 4-H Hand-crafted & Locally Grown Contest

Have you created, baked, grown or preserved something amazing this year? Enter it in our Hand-crafted and Locally Grown contest which will be held during our Farm City Day from 11am-2pm on October 7th, 2023. There are four age groups: Cloverbud (5-7), Junior (8-12), Senior (13-18) and Adult (19+), and four entry categories: Baked Goods, Preserved Foods, Arts & Crafts and Locally Grown.

Save the Date: Farm City Day

Join us on Saturday, October 7th from 11am-2pm for a day of fun for the whole family! Our first annual Farm City Day is a celebration of the importance of agriculture in Yancey County. We will have games, inflatables, food, a rabbit show, our hand-crafted & locally grown contest and so much more!

New Cooking Club!

Does your child like being in the kitchen? We are excited to announce a new 4-H Cooking Club in Yancey County! This club will teach youth about kitchen safety, nutrition, culinary skills and more! Open to youth ages 8-18.

Join us for an interest meeting on September 5th at 6:00pm at the Burnsville Reconciliation House for more information about this new opportunity for youth!

2023 Egg-Cellent Egg Contest

The Egg-cellent Egg Contest is a fun competition for 4‐H members with a flock of chickens that are currently laying eggs. As part of the program, youth will submit up to two sets of 6 eggs which will be judged for uniformity, exterior and interior quality. Participants will also complete supplemental project components based on their age which is part of their final score. This project is so much fun and will teach you so much about eggs you probably never knew! Registration deadline is September 8th.

Save the Date: 2023 4-H Christmas Craft Show

The fourth annual Yancey County 4-H Christmas Craft Show will take place on Saturday, November 18th from 9am-2pm at the Burnsville Town Center. Come and do some early Christmas shopping, all while supporting Yancey County 4-H and local artisans!

Yancey County 4-H'ers who have products they have personally made, are invited to have a free table at the show to sell their items! Spots are limited, so email Jordan to reserve your space today!

2023 Summer Fun Parent Survey

It was a busy summer! Yancey County 4-H held seven different camps and workshops for youth on everything from canning, to exploring different cultures around the world! If you participated in a 2023 Summer Fun program, please take a moment to complete the survey linked below! 4-H News: Twenty Five Yancey County 4-H'ers compete at the West District 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament !

On Saturday, August 12th, over 150 youth from Avery, Buncombe, Caldwell, Haywood, Henderson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Swain and Yancey counties competed in the 2023 N.C. 4-H West District Regional Shooting Sports Tournament in Polk County. Twenty-five club members from Yancey Longshots competed in the Tournament in the Archery, Rifle and Shotgun disciplines.

Kyle Robinson, Jacob Ledford, Micaiah Silvers, Morgan Carroll, Isaac Miller, Ashton Swann, Becca Carroll, Macy Carroll, Makayla Swann, Bradley Jeffords, Mary Grace Holcombe, and Autumn Smith competed in the Small Bore Rifle Class. Liam Ayers, Hunter Geouge, Becca Carroll, Mary Grace Holcombe, JJ Wise, Jacob Ledford, Jett Hensley, Makenna Carroll, Sam Gantt, Kimber Carroll, Jonathan Riddle and Macy Carroll competed in the Compound Archery Class. Hunter Wilson, Liam Ayers, Micaiah Silvers, Isaac Miller, Colston Boone, Max Ballard, Makayla Swann, Jonathan Riddle, Bradley Jeffords, Christian Swann, Hunter Geouge and Hudson Hilliard competed in the Shotgun class.

Nineteen of these youth qualified to advance to the State Competition on September 30th, 2023, this is the most youth that have ever qualified from Yancey County to advance to the State Competition! Congratulations to these youth for their hard work and accomplishments this season!




What can I do with 4-H?

As a new school year begins, we hope you will find a 4-H club to keep your kids learning and having fun outside of the classroom! Check out all of the opportunities below.


Sewing Club - Open to youth ages 5-18 of all skill levels! Learn the basics of sewing and craft your own creations to take home. Youth learn hand sewing and machine sewing techniques. Meeting occur on the first and third Tuesday's at 5:30pm. Continually accepting new members.

Arts & Crafts Club - Explore your creative side, learning about all avenues of arts & crafts! Open to youth ages 5-18. Meetings are on the second Monday of each month at 4:00pm at the Yancey Extension Office. Continually accepting new members.

Lego Club - Open to youth ages 5-18 in Yancey County! Youth will participate in a variety of LEGO challenges, creating their own builds and expressing their creativity, all while making new friends! Club meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 4:00pm. Continually accepting new members.

Outdoor Adventures Club - Learn about natural resources, wildlife, hiking, environmental science and more! Youth have opportunities to attend several trips including hiking, outdoor cooking, kayaking and more! Open to youth ages 8-18. Regular Club Meetings are on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm, with additional field trips as announced. Continually accepting new members.

Rabbit Club - In this club, youth will learn all things rabbit, from choosing and caring for one, raising for meat, breed showing, raising for fiber, showmanship and more! Opportunities to work on individual projects, compete and show will be available. This club has something for everyone from the beginner interested in their first rabbit, to the experienced rabbit owner looking to expand their knowledge. Rabbit ownership is not a requirement to participate in the club. Open to youth ages 5-18. Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Continually accepting new members.

Livestock Club - Does your child like animals, but you aren’t ready to start your own livestock projects at home? The Yancey County 4-H Livestock Club provides an opportunity for youth to learn more about livestock species, without having to own an animal, called Livestock Skillathon. Open to youth ages 8-18. Livestock Club meets on the first and third Monday's at 4:30pm at the Yancey Extension Office. Continually accepting new members.

*New* STEM Club - Learn about all things science, robotics, engineering and more! Open to youth ages 8-18. Youth who participate in this program have the opportunity to attend NC 4-H Electric Congress in July of each year! Meetings are on the second Monday of each month at 5:30pm at the Yancey Extension Office. Continually accepting new members.

*New* Cooking Club -

Longshots - Learn about firearm education, safety, and participate in shooting sports activities, including shotgun, rifle and archery.  Youth have the opportunity to participate in regional, district and state competitions. Open to youth ages 8-18 (as of January 1st of the current year). Club enrollment period is January - February each year.
