The Knowing Moore Campaign Has No Secrets
I am often asked who I work for or what I do. When I try to explain that I work for North Carolina Extension, I’m often meet with glazed expressions of non-comprehension. Both colleagues and advocates complain that NC Extension is the state’s “best kept secret.” However, Extension has no secrets to keep and once more, Extension has played an essential role in our state’s prosperity and in the lives of millions of North Carolinians for over a century by serving the needs of individual counties and families. North Carolina Cooperative Extension, located in county centers in all 100 counties and in the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of Cherokees, is an educational partnership between North Carolina State and North Carolina A&T Universities and local county governments. Local Extension agents backed by more than 1,100 experts and research from the universities utilize resources to deliver practical solutions for local issues that help citizens and communities increase economic prosperity, environmental stewardship and an improved quality of life.

In Moore County our programs focus on sustainable and profitable agriculture, viable home gardens and landscapes, economic development, healthy, accessible and safe nutrition, and experiential positive youth development. Yet, to benefit Moore County families and communities, our presence should be known by the public who we serve.
Knowing Moore is a social media campaign the Moore County Extension staff has embarked on through out the coming year. Each week, a local fact, activity, or opportunity will be posted on our Facebook and Instagram ( https://www.instagram.com/mooreextension/) sites. The weekly posts are designed to inform and promote our programs and resources available to Moore County residents, and to overcome the belief that Moore County Extension is a well-kept secret. Because, quite frankly, we can’t keep secrets.

Marvelous Mulberry |
I heard a podcast the other day that sparked my interest. It was all about mulberry trees. The common mulberry, Morus rubra, is a native to North Carolina. In fact, when I first moved to NC three years ago, I lived in an apartment in the southern part of Moore County. There was a large tree that produced long clustered drupes of fruit, similar in appearance to blackberries. The fruit was very attractive to birds, and the fruit would often drop on the balcony of the apartment and stain the wood. I would later learn that this was a common mulberry tree. |

Start New Holiday Traditions With 4-H |
There are so many holiday movies playing on TV this time of year. One thing that continuously pops up during some of the movies, especially on the hallmark channel, is the traditions that are shared in the family. Whether it’s making a gingerbread house, going to a tree lighting, making crafts as homemade presents, there are always family traditions that are highlighted in the movie. |

Holiday Fun by Doing |
4-H is all about helping kids develop into productive, successful adults through fun and meaningful activities. This holiday season, we have compiled six hands-on projects and the necessary supplies for kids of any age to enjoy. Consider sharing them with others, or saving them to enter at the fair! 4-H is driven by four essential elements- belonging, generosity, independence, and mastery. This winter, we encourage you to think about how you can connect with these elements as you work through these activities. |
