Extension News Currituck County

December 2023

From the Director

If you were longing to see old friends or make some new ones, the Currituck Community Park was the place to be last Friday night! From my vantage point it seemed like all of Currituck came out to the annual Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting. This year's event was the largest and best yet thanks to the many community partners that lent a hand. Though I have lived here all my life, I truly enjoyed making new connections and hugging friends that I haven't seen in years. Currituck is truly a special place to live and I hope we never lose that down home sense of community and family. Happy Holidays from all of us here at NC Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center.

Selection and Care of Living Christmas Trees

The Holidays are upon us and perhaps you are thinking of a more environmentally friendly option for your Christmas Tree. Replanting a living Christmas tree into your landscape after the holiday season could be a wonderful option. You'll need to select the correct variety for our area and pay attention to some care information, but growing a live Christmas tree is achievable even here in coastal North Carolina. Once established, they can often be enjoyed for years to come.

4-H Cloverbud Holiday Traditions

Do you know about the North Carolina tradition of Old Christmas?  It was originally celebrated by colonists in the 18th century around January 5.  It was customary to bless fruit trees or go outside in the early morning to watch livestock kneel in remembrance of the Nativity.  Unwed women would set out a meal at a "dumb table" in hopes to see apparitions of their future husbands.  Join our "Cloverbud Holiday Traditions" class to learn about other fun traditions and maybe start a few of your own!
