Imagine a career where you teach people, and your classroom is a farm, field, factory, forest, home, or community. You are invited to apply to the NC State Extension Summer Internship Program, an experience that will prepare you for a challenging and rewarding career!

Interns will assist Extension Agents through programs such as Master Gardeners, crop protection, diabetes cooking classes, and 4-H livestock projects. Extension internships offer a first-hand view of Extension careers. For these internships, we are seeking students whose academic background is relevant to Extension, especially: agricultural and Extension education; agricultural and resource economics; animal science; applied ecology; biological and agricultural engineering; communications; crop and soil sciences; education; entomology and plant pathology; family and consumer sciences; food, bioprocessing and nutrition sciences; horticultural science; plant and microbial biology; poultry science; public administration; youth development; and others. In 2024, 30 internships are available across North Carolina.

INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAM OPPORTUNITY

________________________________

NC State Extension, in collaboration with NCA&T State University is submitting a proposal to a potential corporate partner to fund a pilot study seeking to engage 4-H youths and senior citizens in a program to enhance health and reduce social isolation of both groups.  University Specialists will train youths to provide training in gardening, Tech Change Makers, Healthy Living, and story telling. Youths will then work with seniors in their own communities. There is evidence that both generations benefit from intergenerational programs.

The state needs 6 counties willing to engage 12 youths in this program. Training will take place from March to May, with the youth-adult engagement taking place twice monthly from June through September.  A final report to the sponsee will be due in December.

If Lee County has 12 members interested in participating, please let me know today and I will put our name in for the pilot.

NC YOUTH INSTITUTE
Calling all 4-H Teens to Building a More Resilient Global Food System!
________________________________

All high school youth are invited to join us for the 2024 North Carolina Youth Institute, an exceptional opportunity that ignites a passion for solving global hunger through an engaging exploration of agriculture and food systems. The North Carolina Youth Institute is an educational initiative of the World Food Prize Foundation and is designed to spark and support emerging leaders in developing innovative solutions for our world’s most pressing grand challenges surrounding feeding a growing population.

The NCYI is hosted by NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, North Carolina Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development Program and the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences and is a part of the World Food Prize Foundation’s Global Youth Institute. Youth come to campus in the spring of each year to attend the day-long institute at NC State University's Plant Sciences Building and share their research paper among peers and a panel of judges. Hands-on workshops, field trips, keynotes and career development will round out the event. There is no registration cost to participate in the Institute. To participate, youth research a global issue and write a three to four page paper under the supervision of a teacher/mentor (using these downloadable guidelines).

For more information on how to participate in the North Carolina Youth Institute, contact the North Carolina State Coordinator Liz Driscoll at liz_driscoll@ncsu.edu or at (919) 886-3424.
