Tomato Field Day

The 2021 NCSU Tomato Field Day focuses on cutting edge research on varieties, disease and insect options, and post-season plastic management. In addition, participants will tour the new produce handling facility at MHCREC to further produce safety practices. Pesticide credits will also be available to participants.

Two sessions will be offered - please sign up for either a morning or afternoon session. All presentations will take place at both sessions.

Specialty Crops Field Day
August 17, 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

NCDA&CS Piedmont Research Station

The 2021 Horticulture & Specialty Crops Field Day offers an educational station tour featuring research trials and presentations by NC State University Research and Extension Specialists. Topics to be covered are floral hemp production, caneberry, blueberry and strawberry breeding programs, caneberry IPM, heat-tolerant tomato studies and cucurbit disease IPM. Pesticide credits will be available, pending approval.

The event will begin promptly at 8:30 am and conclude at 12:30 pm, with a sponsored boxed lunch will follow. Register on Eventbrite for this free event by Friday, August 13, 2021 to be included in the meal. Day-of registration/walk-ins will not be accepted. Please note that facemasks will be required for participants while riding the trams.

Mountain Research Station Field Day

The Mountain Research Station Field Day will feature research updates, trade show, and a complimentary dinner. Pesticide and waste credits will be available. Topics for the day include grafted tomatoes, no-till pumpkins and tomato variety trial, Cigar Wrapper tobacco, updated forest management practices, and high quality baylage and tall fescue variety trials.

The field day will begin promptly at 1:30 pm and conclude with a sponsored meal courtesy of Carolina Farm Credit and Farm Bureau. Registration is free and will take place on the day of the event prior to the 1:30pm start of the program.

Seed Saving 101 Workshop

Saving seed is a critical skill for growers wanting to select desirable traits of their crops. It can also lead to a side enterprise of raising crops specifically for seed production. No matter your inclination, there are specific aspects of seed saving that any beginner should master. Join instructor Angie Lavezzo in diving into the world of seed saving.

Organic Grower's School is hosting this virtual workshop with a sliding scale registration fee. Another in-person session is scheduled for October 17th. For more information on Seed Saving, and to register, visit OGS.
Farm Beginnings Year-Long Farmer Training

Organic Grower's School Farm Beginnings® class is a 12-month training session that uses holistic management to help beginning farmers clarify their goals and strengths, establish a strong enterprise plan and start building their operation.This program is designed for new and prospective farmers who want to plan a profitable farm business. Farm Beginnings builds these skills through one year of farmer-led training, mentoring, and networking.

Farm Beginnings will be hybrid for 2021/2022. This is a year long program, starting October 24th and ending September 2022. Interested growers can attend an online information session to learn more about this program on Aug 19, 2021 from 7-8pm - Register for Info Session
