Clay County Historic Resources Survey
Historic Hayesville, INC (HHI) & NC Cooperative Extension – Clay County Center (NCCE) is partnering with the North Carolina Historic Preservation Office (HPO) to identify historic properties, including houses, industry buildings, agriculture buildings, churches, schools, commercial buildings, etc., that will help tell the story and represent Clay County’s history!
The survey is being conducted by Audrey Thomas and Dr. Michael Ann Williams, survey specialist with the North Carolina Historic Preservation Office. The HPO is a state agency of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and is dedicated to the identification, documentation, and preservation of historic buildings, structures, objects, and sites across North Carolina. With the help of the citizens of Clay County, HPO will be able to record these historic properties through written information and photography. The information gathered will inform future planning and community development efforts as well as be useful to local stakeholders interested in promoting Clay County’s history and heritage, as well as helping to educate those of all ages on the history of Clay County.
While the HPO has been hard at work since November touring Clay County and visiting with residents to learn as much as possible, we need your help in continuing to identify these places of historical interest so that they can be documented for future generations. If you own or know of a place that could be listed on the survey, you can contact Sandy Zimmerman with HHI at (828) 389-9898 or Tyler Osborn at NCCE at (828) 389-6305 and they will then pass this information along to the HPO. You can also contact the survey specialist directly – Audrey Thomas Audrey.thomas@dncr.nc.gov (828) 250-3107 or Michael Ann Williams at michaelann.williams@dncr.nc.gov.
