March 2024

Time to Sign Up for Lambs
If you are interested in raising and showing a lamb this year, we are taking sign ups now.  We will receive lambs around the first week of June. A few things to know:
  • You raise your lamb at home and must have a dry, covered area to house them
  • Our raising and show season lasts from June until September - October
  • Our club has the opportunity to show 4-6 times during the year
  • A deposit of $25 will reserve your space and covers your lamb, halter and first bag of feed (the $450 lamb costs are sponsored by Farm Bureau)
  • We will meet every other week during the summer at the Macon County Fairgrounds
  • Expect to return your lamb at the end of the show season to support the program next year

For more information, please call Joe Deal or Tammara Talley at 349-2046

Club Corner
Macon Mountain Goats 4-H Club

Macon Mountain Goats are doing after school VIP visits with all Macon elementary schools on Fridays.  Our club is telling students the benefits and programs 4-H offers. We bring a goat and a goose for the kids to feed and pet.  So far we have visited MVI, Iotla, and Cartoogechaye.  We have East Franklin and South Macon left to visit.

This month we will meet on Tuesday March 12th at 6:00 at the Cooperative Extension Office conference room.  We will have officer elections so think about which office you might want to serve in.

Macon Archers

This is the last month we will shoot inside at the fairgrounds. In April, we will move back outside to our 4-H range. We will continue to shoot on Thursdays at 5:00pm for first year shooters and at 6:00pm for advanced shooters.
Macon Sharp Shooters

This is also the last month that rifle will practice inside.  We will return to the sheriff department range in April.  In March, we will shoot at the Cooperative Extension Office conference room on Monday March 18th and 25th at 5:00pm.
Budding Chefs and Top Chefs

Last month we learned to make pancakes from scratch and how to cook different types of eggs - such as over easy or scrambled.  Please join us this month on Tuesday March 12th for Top Chefs (ages 9-18) or on Wednesday March 13th for Budding Chefs (ages 5-8).  Both groups will meet at 3:45 at the Cooperative Extension Office.

Sassy Stitchers

We are the busiest club around.  This month we have been looking at pictures of our past projects in order to work on our project record books.  Our beginners group also made skirts.  In March the Beginners 3:45 group will meet on March 7th and 14th.  The Beginners 2:00 group will meet on March 21st and 28th.  The Advanced group will meet on March 21st and 28th at 3:45.

WHEP
(Wildlife Habitat Education Program)

Are you interested in forest, fish and wildlife?  This may be a group you want to check out.  Our WHEP group is exploring different species of wildlife and how they work with their habitat to survive.   In February, we made bat houses.  In March we will finish our bat houses on March 5th at 4:00pm go on a hike on March 19th and visit a wildlife rehabilitator on March 26th.

Macon 4-H Beekeepers

We have a great new group of beekeepers starting the 2024 year.  In February, we have been learning the different parts of the hive and the jobs of different ages of bees.  This month we will meet on Wednesday March 13th and 27th at 5:30pm at the Macon County Cooperative Extension meeting room.

Macon Livestock Judging Team

Our Livestock Judging Team had their organizational meeting in February and will be meeting on Thursdays from 5:00 - 6:00.  There is still space available on this team.  If you would like more information, please call Joe Deal at 828-349-2046
