Essential responsibilities for the position include planning, marketing, conducting and evaluating educational programs in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) for Catawba County.
Emphasis of the Family and Consumer Sciences program is on nutrition, food safety, health and wellness, food preservation, chronic disease reduction, and volunteer management. The position will conduct viable, proactive research-based educational programs in these areas primarily for adult audiences. The position will collaborate with Extension agents in the region on common educational program initiatives. All agents are expected to have a youth component in their programming.
There is a strong demand for food safety information from home audiences, non-profit organizations, churches, commercial food operations and the restaurant trade. The ability to obtain training in an approved food safety certification program is expected.

We will miss Tina McGillvary and wish her well in her new adventure! Tina started with Cooperative Extension as the 4-H Program Assistant and was led by her passion for healthy, local foods to being the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent.

4-H Plant Sale
Just a few days remaining to order your spring plants with the 4-H Plant Sale. Plants will be ready for pick-up in mid-March. Proceeds from the sale benefit 4-H and Extension programs in Catawba County. Plants can be ordered online and the payment mailed to the Extension office. Plants available for order are: Blackberries, Blueberries, Strawberries, Raspberries Asparagus, Muscadines, and Elderberry. Order deadline extended to March 8.

4-H Shooting Sports Club Info Meeting

Top Shots 4-H Club is gearing up for the 2024 season with their Informational Meeting to kick-off the year. Welcome and thanks to Emily Kanupp and Tarah Steele, who will be the new organizational leaders for the club. New and returning members should plan to attend and learn about plans for the year, NC 4-H shooting sports program, and other opportunities in 4-H. Parents should plan to attend this meeting with their child. The club meets on Wednesday evenings at Catawba Valley Rifle and Pistol Club from March-September. Before youth are allowed to shoot with the club, they must be registered in 4-H Online and complete the NC Hunter Safety course. Ronnie Hicks (4-H shooting sports coach) will be offered a Hunter Safety course on Saturday, March 9 at the Ag Resources for those who might need it. Register for the Hunter Safety course using 4-H Online, look under "Events".

Local Foods Cooking Class
Learn to make healthy and easy meals with local foods.
Registration will open March 8 at 9am.
Classes will be 4/17, 5/22, 6/19, 7/17, 8/21, 9/18, 10/16 alternating between NC Cooperative Extension office in Newton and the Hickory Soup Kitchen.
Tickets are $10 per class & include a demonstration of 3 recipes, samples and a $10 bag of produce.

FAFSA Day for Spanish Speakers
Do you need help completing the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)?
Catawba County Juntos, along with CFNC-Spanish Services, is hosting a free FAFSA Day for Spanish Speakers at the
St. Stephens High School cafeteria from 9 am to 12 pm on Saturday, March 9, 2024. Students are asked to please bring a computer and their parents' 2022 federal taxes.

4-H Robotics Club Open House

Come and learn about plans for the 4-H Robotics Club as we start the year with a new leader and new First Lego League curriculum. Welcome and thanks to Jeff Kiefer, who is the new club leader! The club will be meeting on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month from 4:00-5:30 p.m. Youth learn about coding, engineering design, and effectively working and communicating with others as they work through the challenges associated with the Master Piece First Lego League 2024 challenges. Youth ages 10 and older, but we may accept a few slightly younger ones with prior Lego experience. Lego Robotics items provided by grant from STEMWest.
Register to attend the Open House Meeting to help us plan. Youth who decide to join the club, will also need to enroll using 4-H Online.

4-H Overnight Summer Camp
June 30 - July 2
July 7-12
We are continuing to accept registration for 4-H Overnight Summer Camp. We still have spaces are remaining for Cloverbud Camp AND BOY spaces for Jr 4-H Camp
(July 7-12). Some scholarship opportunities may be available. In addition to attending camp with Catawba County, 4-H'ers can also register to attend the camp of their choice on the date of their choice with camp open enrollment. It is not necessary to be a 4-H member to register for camp.
