Important Changes to Meeting Locations in March!

The Yancey County Cooperative Extension shares our office with the Yancey County Board of Elections (BOE). The BOE will be using the conference room for upcoming voting during the month of March, so please note the change in meeting locations listed on the upcoming events calendar at the end of the newsletter!

New Opportunity -

Beef & Livestock Club!

Does your child enjoy learning about livestock species including beef, goats, poultry, swine and sheep? If so, we have an exciting new opportunity! The Yancey County 4-H Beef & Livestock Club will provide opportunities for youth to learn about livestock species through hands-on livestock projects AND skillathon competitions where youth can learn about livestock anatomy, breeds, meat processing and more! Youth DO NOT have to own an animal to participate in this club. Join us for our first meeting of the year on Tuesday, March 12th at 6:00pm at the Yancey Senior Center to learn more. Open to youth ages 8-18.

Join us for 4-H Overnight Camp in 2024!

Thanks to our generous sponsors, we have scholarships to help send Yancey County 4-H youth to camp this year! These scholarships are limited and awarded on a needs-basis. Contact Jordan for more information. In 2024, we will be camping at Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Camp in Reidsville, NC, June 16-21st. Reserve your space today so that your child will have a week full of fun at
4-H camp in 2024, an experience they will never forget!

Calling all Youth Chefs!

Would you like to be part of a Yancey County 4-H team for the Dinah Gore Food Challenge? Contact Jordan today!

  • A team of 3 to 4 4-H’ers will create a dish to serve 3 people using a predetermined ingredient, food category (Protein, Grains, Fruit & Vegetable, and Dairy), and items from the grocery store.
  • Once the ingredient is revealed, the team will have 40 minutes to prepare the dish, clean up, and prepare their presentation for the judges.
  • The team will make a presentation to the judges after the dish is ready. The presentation, about their dish, should include its health benefits and the nutrients that the dish provides to the body. The presentations are no more than 10 minutes long including Q&A.

4-H A.I.R.E Competition

AIRE (Application, Interview, Resume, and Essay) is a workforce development and college prep program where you “interview” to win National 4-H trips! These trips are at no cost if you are selected for the “job!”

Who Can Participate?

Youth, ages 11 – 18, are eligible to participate in this program in one of two ways. Any youth ages 14-18 may participate who have been active in county, district 4-H programs. Age is determined by age as of January 1 of the current year.

Yancey County 4-H Needs You!

Did you know that 4-H is a volunteer- based program? Without the passion and dedication of our volunteers, most of our 4-H program would not be possible! We are always looking for volunteers to help provide fun learning opportunities for youth in Yancey County! If you would be willing to donate your time, contact Jordan English today!
