Free Soil Samples
Healthy soil is the foundation of successful gardening. The first step to cultivating healthy soil is having your soil tested. Collecting soil samples only takes a few minutes and has many benefits.

Callery Pears
Over the last several weeks, our office has received many calls about the beautiful white trees that are in bloom right now. In short, those trees are Callery Pears (Pyrus calleryana Decene) – an Asian ornamental pear often sold under the name of Bradford, Chanticleer, Cleveland Select, Autumn Blaze, or Aristocrate.

Free Pressure Canner Testing
It’s very important that the method you use to preserve your food, especially canned foods, is done correctly to prevent spoilage. If you plan on pressure canning this summer, be sure your pressure canner is in good shape and equipped to do the job.
Staff Wellness Day @ CCS
Kim Terrell, our FCS Agent, was invited to participate in CCS’ Staff Wellness Day which was held on March 18th. Staff learned about the importance of decreasing added sugars in their diet and got to prepare and taste healthy alternatives including protein power balls, hummus, ginger shots, and homemade trail mix.

Summer Bulbs
Bulbs, including corms, tubers, and rhizomes, are storage tanks that keep plants alive during dormant periods and nourish during the growing season. This, then, is the optimal time to fertilize bulbs that bloom in the spring (daffodils, tulips, etc.) so the plant can renew its food storage for next spring’s bloom.
Scholarship Opportunity
The Clay County Master Gardener Volunteer Association (CCMGVA) is pleased to announce it will be awarding the Carolyn Krueger Memorial Scholarship plus two additional scholarships to seniors at Hayesville High School.

Clay County Historic Resources Survey
Historic Hayesville, INC (HHI) & NC Cooperative Extension – Clay County Center (NCCE) is partnering with the North Carolina Historic Preservation Office (HPO) to identify historic properties, including houses, industry buildings, agriculture buildings, churches, schools, commercial buildings, etc., that will help tell the story and represent Clay County’s history!

The survey is being conducted by Audrey Thomas and Dr. Michael Ann Williams, survey specialist with the North Carolina Historic Preservation Office. The HPO is a state agency of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and is dedicated to the identification, documentation, and preservation of historic buildings, structures, objects, and sites across North Carolina. With the help of the citizens of Clay County, HPO will be able to record these historic properties through written information and photography. The information gathered will inform future planning and community development efforts as well as be useful to local stakeholders interested in promoting Clay County’s history and heritage, as well as helping to educate those of all ages on the history of Clay County.

While the HPO has been hard at work since November touring Clay County and visiting with residents to learn as much as possible, we need your help in continuing to identify these places of historical interest so that they can be documented for future generations. If you own or know of a place that could be listed on the survey, you can contact Sandy Zimmerman with HHI at (828) 389-9898 or Tyler Osborn at NCCE at (828) 389-6305 and they will then pass this information along to the HPO. You can also contact the survey specialist directly – Audrey Thomas Audrey.thomas@dncr.nc.gov (828) 250-3107 or Michael Ann Williams at michaelann.williams@dncr.nc.gov.
