Macon County 4-H Newsletter

We are so glad to welcome
Kaiya Pickens
to the Macon County 4-H family. 

Kaiya grew up in Cherokee County and was also was a 4-Her.  She loves livestock, gardening, wildlife, hunting and cooking. In addition to participating with our 4-H clubs, Kaiya will also be teaching healthy nutrition and active living in the Macon County schools. She is excited to have a job that bridges agriculture and nutrition. Make sure you introduce yourself when you see Kaiya at club meetings.  Her email address is: kaiya_pickens@ncsu.edu.

Sign Up Now for the 2024 Market Lamb Project

Are you interested in raising and showing a project lamb this summer?  Here is a great opportunity to learn all about lambs, how to show them, how to raise and care for them. 

  • If you do not know where to start - that is OK.  We have the knowledge and equipment to help you be successful

Lamb Project Orientation will be on Tuesday April 23rd at 6:00pm

Let 4-H Hear Your Voice

Now is the time to think about your topic for the 2024 presentation competition.  Do you have a subject that you really love?  Do you know something you would like to teach someone else?  Here is some info you will want to know. The deadline for your presentation title and subject area is May 14th.

  • 4-H Presentations are for all ages.  Age divisions: 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, 14-18
  • Ages 8 and up can win ribbons, medals and money depending on the category
  • Save the date: District Activity Day (competition day) is Friday June 16th
  • Please let Tammara know if you would like help with your presentation

Club Corner
Macon Mountain Goats 4-H Club

Congratulations to our new officers for the 2024-2025 year. The club elected:
President - Ava Perkins
Vice President - Hayden McDonald
Secretary - Andi Setser
Events Coordinator - Willow Wood

Macon Mountain Goat will be volunteering at Hot Mess Horse and Animal Rescue on Tuesday April 9th.  Will meet at the rescue at 6 pm and plan to give vaccines, trim hooves, castrate and general health exams to the goats currently living at the rescue.  Please wear sturdy shoes and barn clothes.

Macon Archers

Cool shot of April - Mya Cicman with a "Robin Hood" arrow.  We are back outside for April through this fall.  First year archers will meet at 5:00pm on Thursdays and advanced archers will meet at 6:00pm.  Our dates for April will be the 11th, 18th and 25th.
Macon Sharp Shooters

We are back at the Sheriffs range for the summer and fall.  Our first outdoor practice of the year will be on Saturday April 13th at 9:00am.  We will also meet on Saturday April 20th.  The address is Radio Hill Road Franklin, NC 28734.  Look for the 4-H Clover signs. 
Budding Chefs and Top Chefs

In March, we explored great snacks and in April we will be making fantastic protein salads such as chicken salad and egg salad.  Then we will learn all the fun, funky ways we can serve our creations.

Top Chefs (ages 9-18) will meet on Tuesday April 9th at 3:45 and Budding Chefs (ages 5-8) will meet on Wednesday April 10th at 3:45.

Sassy Stitchers
Always busy and always creative - the 3:45 Beginners class will meet on Thursday April 4th and 11th.  The 2:00pm Beginners class will meet on Thursday April 18th and 25th.  Our advanced class will meet on Thursday April 18th and 25th at 3:45.  The advanced group is currently making their own bags complete with straps and zippers.  

WHEP (Wildlife Habitat Education Program)


In March, we were able to explore Tessentee Bottoms on a hike and learn about insects on a rainy day.  Ask our WHEP group if they can name the different anatomy parts of an insect - bet 'cha they can tell you.

In April, we will take a Mushroom Hike on Tuesday April 16th at 4:00pm and we will visit a wildlife rehabilitation on Tuesday April 30th.  Please call the Extension Office if you would like more information about this club.  We have some super fun things going on...

Livestock Judging Team

The Livestock Judging Team is learning the anatomy and physiology of not one, not two but four species of livestock.  This team will meet on Thursdays through April.  Study hard team, we can't wait to see you shine.

Macon 4-H Beekeepers

Check out our beehive supers that we painted in March.  We are heading out into the bee-yard in April.  This month we will meet on Wednesday April 10th and April 24th at 5:30pm.
