Field Crops Update
The field crops program has been busy this month. Plots at the Oxford Tobacco Research Station and on Granville County farms have been established. Though we have had a lot of rain in May, many of these plots look great and should provide an abundance of information to growers after harvest this year! Plots that have been put in Granville County include:
  • Tobacco Breeding Plots
  • Tobacco Official Variety Trial (OVT)
  • Tobacco Insect Control Trials
  • Tobacco Disease Control Trials
  • Small Plot Corn OVT
  • On-Farm Corn Variety Trial in Cooperation with Person, Caswell, and Alamance Counties
  • Soybean Fungicide Trial
  • Soybean Indeterminate/Determinate Trial
  • Soybean Desiccation Trial
  • And more to come!
If you have questions about field crop research and how it impacts local farms, contact Mikayla Berryhill at 919-603-1350 or mikayla_berryhill@ncsu.edu.

Beef Cattle Reproduction Workshop was a Hit!
Granville County Cooperative Extension partnered with Caswell and Orange/Durham Cooperative Extension along with an NCSU Beef Extension Specialist to host a Beef Cattle Reproduction Workshop at Butner Beef Cattle Field Lab on May 23 and 24. The intent of this workshop was to provide beef cattle producers an introduction into beef cattle reproduction including the benefits of artificial insemination and estrous synchronization. Additionally, mating decisions to improve herds was discussed. The attendees had the opportunity to see and touch female bovine reproduction tracts. Furthermore, ample time was provided to allow participants to draw blood from and to palpate cattle. Both of these techniques are used to determine pregnancy in cows. Evaluations were positive with almost all attendees indicating it was better than expected; that they increased their knowledge and skills and that they are more confident in palpation and tail bleeding.
4 County Poultry Show & Sale Project is Underway!
The 4 County Poultry Show and Sale project is underway for 2024. Youth, ages 5-18, from Granville, Franklin, Vance and Warren counties who signed up received their chicks on May 15. They will raise and care for them until the show and sale on October 26, 2024. If you're looking for backyard birds for yourself, this is a great place to purchase some. These birds will be ready to start laying by show/sale time and have been handled by kids.
