NC Farm Link

Take a few minutes and see how the NC Farm Link program connected Stokes County farmer, Calvin Covington, with aspiring farmers Gerald and Ali Conrad who are now raising a few hundred sheep north of King.  Follow them on Instagram at sunsetacres_nc. https://youtu.be/ZSPcpLQEjSM?si=h4mTjg2xRZ3r9AjV

Learn more about NC Farm Link, or create your own account at https://ncfarmlink.ces.ncsu.edu/.

Free EID Tags for Cattle Producers

NC Farm ID issues identification cards to livestock premises who obtains a National Premises Identification Number (PIN). You are not required to show this card at sales, auctions, or events. It is merely a more permanent and convenient proof of your premises registration. If your card is lost or stolen, you can request another card by sending an email to NCFarmID@ncagr.gov, or by calling 919-707-3250.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is giving out 100 free EID button tags to cattle producers that register with the NC Farm ID Program or to producers that already have a Farm ID but need EID buttons They will also provide you with a tag applicator (while supplies last on both tags and taggers).   https://www.ncagr.gov/divisions/veterinary/licensing%20%26%20forms#FarmIDLivestockPremiseRegistrationNationalPINCards-2440.   Questions? Email NCFarmID@ncagr.gov

After November 5, 2024, some cattle will be required to have an EID including:

  • All sexually intact cattle and bison 18 months of age or over

  • All female dairy cattle of any age

  • All male dairy cattle born after March 11, 2013

  • Cattle and bison of any age used for rodeos, recreation events, shows, or exhibitions.

Exempt animals are:

  • Beef cattle under 18 months of age

  • Cattle and bison if they are going directly to slaughter

  • Cattle and bison that DO NOT move interstate (unless required by APHIS)

Scrapie tags are already required for sheep and goats if they are leaving your farm, and for swine that travel public roads.

Small Businesses (and Farms) Must Complete a Beneficial Ownership Information (BIO)

As part of the Corporate Transparency Act (part of the Anti-Money Laundering Act) businesses should complete the Beneficial Ownership Information (BIO) by January 1, 2025 if they formed prior to January 1, 2024. New entities formed after January 1, 2024, have 90 to file. Entities formed after January 1, 2025, have 30 days to file.

Summer Stockpiling

With the rainfall that we've had this spring, there's a good chance that some of your forage may have gotten ahead of your livestock. If you aren't mowing it for hay, consider stockpiling about 25% of your pastures for your livestock to graze during the summer slump of Mid-August.  In mid-July, stop grazing another 25% and allow it to re-grow until Mid-October. Learn more and see diagrams at:

https://augusta.ext.vt.edu/content/dam/augusta_ext_vt_edu/files/Using_a_Summer_Stockpiling_System_to_Extend_the_Grazing_Season.pdf

Wool Pool

There will be a Wool Pool in August in Virginia and we hope to provide collection and transportation from Stokes County to this event. We should know more soon, but save your wool.

Dairy Goat Management for the Homesteader

Interested in raising dairy goats? Join Area Specialized Dairy Agent, Marti Day, via Zoom for a discussion about feeding your dairy goat. We will discuss nutrition, as well as visual hay analysis versus chemical analysis. In addition, we will also share information about milk quality, mastitis, and food safety.  Register at https://go.ncsu.edu/stokesdairy24

Frankly, North Carolina doesn't have a lot of research-based information on dairy goats, so I'm excited that we get to offer this course. In the meantime, check out this information from the University of Missouri https://extension.missouri.edu/publications/g3990.

Pasture Walk - Save the Date

We are planning a Pasture Walk on Tuesday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m.  We will discuss rotational grazing, cost-share assistance and other programs from Soil and Water Conservation, forage species, and more.

I think it's worth mentioning that it's extremely difficult to meet the needs of a lactating female of any species, using our traditional Kentucky 31 type Fescue varieties. Come learn about some improved forage varieties at this pasture walk. You can also learn more about the nutritional needs of goats at the two aforementioned workshops.
