Hemlocks are magnificent evergreen trees that play a crucial role in the ecosystems of North America. Hemlocks have graceful, feathery foliage and a towering presence. They provide habitat for wildlife, regulate water cycles, and contribute to the aesthetic beauty of forests and landscapes. However, these majestic trees are under severe threat from an invasive pest: the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA).
We are excited to introduce our newest addition to the NCCE-McDowell Center team, our summer intern Jocelyn. Bringing a fresh perspective and a passion for community engagement, our intern will be working closely with our staff to support projects that bring us into the 21st century.
The Agricultural Advisory Board is seeking a volunteer to serve on the Board. The purpose of the Board is to review and approve applications for qualified farmland and voluntary agricultural districts and make recommendations concerning the establishment.

With the beginning of summer upon us, it’s a great time to find recipes for all the fresh fruits and vegetables that are here! You can pull from your own garden, subscribe to a local CSA box, visit a tailgate market or a local produce stand.
Summer Hands-on Canning Classes What better way to learn something new or to brush up on skills than to take a hands-on class. This summer N.C. Cooperative Extension, McDowell County Center will partner to offer hands-on canning classes at the Foothills Food Hub, Sue Glovier Teaching Kitchen.
McDowell 4-H Young Guns Compete at State Tournament On Saturday, April 27, the McDowell Young Guns Shooting Sports team competed at the annual NC Wildlife Resources Commission Hunter Education Tournament. This truly is the best of the best and McDowell 4-H was the only
4-H team to advance to state competition.
