Native Pollinator Guide

Learn what plants can attract essential pollinators to your living space! This guide lists excellent native pollinator-attracting plants that will keep our gardens flourishing for years to come. The birds, butterflies, and bees will thank you!

A Successful Celebrate Pollinators Day

June 22nd was Celebrate Pollinators Day 2024 at the NC Cooperative Extension - Guilford County Center, hosted annually by the Extension Master Gardener Volunteers. There was a great turnout for this free event, with over 250 people in attendance! Joined by learning partners Guilford County Beekeepers Association, North Carolina Native Plant Society, High Point University's Mobile Lab, City of Greensboro's Water Resources Department, and so many more, we celebrated #PollinatorWeek in our public Karen C. Neill Demonstration and Mixed Greens Community Garden with pollinator scavenger hunts, bee hotels, seed balls, and providing information about all-things pollinators.

Some of our Extension Master Gardener volunteers doubled as representatives for the Piedmont Bird Club: Anne Presnell, Lynne Gray, and Janet Sommers!

Extension Master Gardener volunteer, Barb Purdie, with a Gardening for the Birds poster.

Mary Barbee, Carolyn Pokela, and Barbara Jackson representing the Mixed Greens Community Garden.

Extension Consumer Horticulture Agent, Taylor Jones, helping out at the festivities.

Whether you left this event with a new plant or with new knowledge, we thank you for making this event a success- and for caring about pollinators in Guilford County!
Couldn't make it to this event? Our Karen C. Neill Demonstration Garden (3309 Burlington Rd., Greensboro, NC 27405) is a free public garden. Come check it out! If you have questions about pollinators or are interested in resources shared at this event, contact our Extension Master Gardener volunteers at (336) 641-2404 or guilfordmg@gmail.com.

4-H Camps are Underway!

In June, 4-H hosted their Life Skills Camp, Agriculture Camp, and Chef and the Child Camp, a collaboration with the Extension Family & Consumer Sciences Program. During Life Skills Camp, kids ages 9+ learned essential skills such as CPR, cooking, nature identification, exercise, financial literacy, and more! During Chef and the Child Camp, campers learned about food safety and cooked tasty recipes with chefs from Guilford Technical Community College and other local organizations. One of the recipes they made was ice cream in a bag, where they tossed the icy ingredients in bags to enable the churning process! Agriculture camp entailed touring sites with different agricultural commodities in Guilford County, and going behind the scenes to see how our food is produced.

Tips to Beat

the Heat!

Check out a new article written by Livestock and Forage Crops Agent, Cole Maness, all about building drought resistance in agriculture as we head into some of the hottest days of the summer.

Horticulture Agent, Taylor Jones, explains personal and garden heat protection in this video on our social media.

Is your lawn crunchy? Learn about the yellow and brown patches you might be seeing due to the heat in this WFMY News 2 interview with our Horticulture Staff, Taylor Jones and Emerson Wells.
