July's 4-H Summer Opportunities

Another busy month for Alexander 4-H with summer programming, but so much fun.
July started with Farm to Fork.  Participants visited area farms and grabbed produce and products to bring back to our kitchen and use in recipes.  Thanks to the area farms for hosting our group:  Campbells Berry Farm, The Farmer's Daughter, Chapman's Dairy, Danny Price Bees, and Deal's Orchards.

The next camp to be held was Mad Scientist where our younger age group became scientist.  Participants took everyday house hold items and used them to explore and think.  The remainder of that week STEM Camp was held with the older youth.  STEM activities provide hands on and minds on learning lessons.  Rockets, battlebots and chemistry experiments were completed with this group all while having fun.

Next, 4-H offered an Intro to Sewing camp.  Participants learned the basics of sewing with machines as well as hand sewing.  Pillows, bags and all kinds of creative sewing projects were completed by participants during this camp.

The last camp offered in July was Discovery Day Camp.  Each day participants visited a different place to be educated all while having fun.  Places the group ventured to were:  North Carolina Zoo, Rocky Face Park, Bethlehem Beach, Discovery Place, Charlotte Motor Speedway and Lake Norman State Park.

Below are pictures captured from these summer opportunities:

NC 4-H Congress

Alexander County 4-H was represented at NC 4-H Congress by Eowyn Berwick. We had an awesome week learning, exploring, and meeting new people.
4-H Mini Garden Judging

The Alexander 4-H Mini Garden Project
provides seeds and instructions to plant different vegetables.  4-H'ers are encouraged to take pictures and keep a journal of the project from planting to harvesting to help complete a 4-H Project Book to submit for competition at a later date.  Once the gardens are up in growth Cari Mitchell, Horticulture Agent and DJ Salyer, 4-H Agent, take judges out to the garden locations to judge.  Prizes are given to the top three winners.

We had some awesome gardens to judge this year for the 4-H Mini Garden Project.

Contest Results:
1st place Arrow Berwick
2nd place Natalie Robinson
3rd place Hawthorne Berwick

Alexander County Livestock 4-H Club met on Monday, August 5th.   Callie Iversen showed each member the correct way to give injections to animals. The members were able to practice on oranges and bananas. They will not meet in September. They welcome new members to the October meeting the first Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at the NC Cooperative Extension Center.

Alexander County 4-H Garden Club
met in July to talk about plant and flower pressing with one of our Extension Master Gardener Interns! Nicole led the group in a discussion on why we press flowers and how they could press their own. Nicole made each of the kids one of their own plant presses that they could take home and they got to press some of the pretty flowers from our Community Garden!

Alexander County Offices will be closed on Monday, September 2nd in observance of Labor Day.
