October 2024

From the Director

flier for western nc hurricane disaster relief

Currituck County Planes and Plows is this Saturday, October 5 from 11-5:30 at 107 College Way in Barco. While it feels strange to be enjoying a fun community event while our neighbors to the west are enduring unimaginable suffering, I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to bring new items to our collection drive (see list above). We'll be working through the Cooperative Extension network as well as Operation Air Drop to get much needed items to the western part of North Carolina. If you prefer to make a monetary donation, please choose the established charity of your choice. Two that are currently on the ground in Asheville are listed above.

The day does promise to be fun and exciting with live bands, the ag olympics, equipment, inflatables, displays, vendors, food trucks and much more! Text CTUCKDAY to 888777 to receive updates. To ensure your spot at this amazing event, please register at planesandplows24.eventbrite.com.

NC Cooperative Extension in Currituck County announces that Olivia Patchel, our Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, has vacated her role to pursue new opportunities. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Olivia for her dedication and contributions to the Currituck community.

During her tenure, Olivia was dedicated to improving the health and wellness of Currituck citizens through nutrition education, championing food safety and promoting physical activity. She provided leadership to the Extension and Community Association, the Seniors Health Insurance Information Program Volunteers, and began Currituck’s first Extension Master Foods Volunteer Program. We are grateful for all of Olivia’s contributions and wish her well in her future endeavors.

Medicare Open Enrollment

If you are a Medicare Beneficiary you are eligible to review and/or change your part D, Drug Coverage, every year between October 15 and December 7. This time is known as the Medicare Annual Election Period. It is definitely worth taking the time to review and compare your Medicare health plan options, but you don’t have to navigate the system alone. N.C. Cooperative Extension and the North Carolina Department of Insurance have a wonderful program to help you navigate through the annual election period.

Horse Bowl

Horse bowl is a quiz bowl type contest where youth learn facts about horses. This practice will help prepare youth for the upcoming district competition held in February and state competition held in March. You do not need to own a horse to compete. This is an excellent way for youth to learn, especially those desiring a field in veterinary medicine.
