Soil and Sediment Testing Post Flood

After floods gardeners may be concerned about soil contamination from sediments that may have settled in gardens. Unless you are near a a site that is known to be contaminated such as a factory or junkyard, your soil is probably ok. However, you can do soil tests to see if your soils carry contaminates. Contact our office for local companies that do these tests.

Testing Wells in Henderson County

Municipality supplied water is tested and retested for quality and safety. Most wells are not. If your drinking water comes from a private well, you should test your water annually or after a major weather event.

WNC Communities recognizes that farmers in the region have immediate disaster relief needs to stabilize their farm businesses and to support a resilient regional food system. The goal of this program is to provide resources quickly, while making reasonable efforts not to duplicate other funding sources.


Farmer and Rural Mental Health Resources

The North Carolina Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network (FRSAN), an initiative of the N.C. Agromedicine Institute coordinated by East Carolina, N.C. A&T State and NC State universities, provides farmers and others working in agriculture-related settings a variety of stress assistance resources and programs.

Fall Food Preservation: Sauerkraut

As temperatures are cooling down and fall crops are starting come in, let’s make the most of our seasonal produce, like cabbage! Fermenting cabbage helps to break down components of the plant matter to make the vitamins and minerals in cabbage more easily available for absorption. Sauerkraut is a good source of potassium, iron and calcium.
