It's 4-H Plant Sale Time!


Cherokee County 4-H is conducting its annual plant and fruit tree sale. All proceeds will go to Cherokee County 4-H. As usual, the plants and trees will be of high quality and reasonably priced. The plant and tree sale starts on February 1 and ends the middle of March. Plants will be available for pick up in April.

Extension Food Drive 2025


The Extension Food Drive has reached its halfway point! We are thrilled to announce in the month of February the community has donated over 1500 items (more than 1,000 lbs. of food)! Food collections have already begun to be distributed and has reached 6 Cherokee County food pantry locations with over 1200 items! The Bunnies, Bovines, Bees, & Birds 4-H Club is geared up for the year ahead and has some fun learning experiences planned for the upcoming meetings. The Bunnies, Bovines, Bees, & Birds 4-H Club focuses on teaching youth about livestock animals, honey bees, and other animals other than horses.

Shiitake Mushroom Production Workshop


Extension Master Gardener Volunteers℠ in Cherokee County will teach a hands on Shiitake Mushroom class. The class will include a 1 hour of classroom and 1 hour hands on instruction. There will be an overview about cultivation, types, uses, and methods for different types of mushrooms. Workshop will include hands on instruction, including the seeding of Oak logs which participants will take home to grow Shiitake Mushrooms.

Cherokee County currently has five active 4-H Clubs. All of our clubs are open to youth ages 5-18 except for our Cherokee On The Fly 4-H Club and 4-H Cooking, Crafting, & Community Club. All of our 4-H clubs are free to enroll in.

Gardening Basics Offered By Extension Master Gardeners


Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers of Cherokee County will be offering free gardening classes each month from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m.  Classes will be held at Konehete Park located at 699B Connahetta Street in Murphy, NC.

This club focuses on being creative with crafts, learning cooking skills, and giving back through community service. Youth will create projects to enter in regional fairs and contest. We will focus on 4-H presentations and community service projects.

Sit & Knit is a welcoming fiber arts group in Cherokee County.  This Extension Community Association club is open to all adults. Members gather with their portable crafts to socialize, learn new fiber skills, and create handmade items for donation at the end of each year. Crochet and knitting instruction is available!

Soil Sampling is an important tool for homeowners and gardeners. Farmers have been relying on this information for many years to be successful in growing crops, pasture, and tree farms. Soil sampling materials can be picked up at our office location during normal business hours. We have a self help table located on the 2nd floor in which you can pick-up the boxes, forms, and instructions.

ECA: Advanced Sewing Class-Zipper, Buttonholer and Walking Foot


In this 3 hour instructional sewing class, hosted by the ECA: Sew Much Fun Sew Club, you will master and complete 3 projects to take home with you. Supplies including all materials and sewing machines will be provided.

Cherokee On the Fly 4-H Club is Open for Enrollment


This Cherokee On The Fly 4-H Club will started back January 2025. They had been on break from June 2024 to December 2024 to allow our volunteer recovery time from surgery. The February meeting is the 20th, from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00p.m.

Workshop – Internet Resources for Plant Identification


New tools to identify plants have a great deal of potential, but there are limitations. General search engines and specialized applications will be demonstrated and compared. Attend and explore the possibilities, while learning to discern when it may be suitable to utilize these methods to fulfill species recognition needs.

Community Help Hiwassee Dam Satellite


The Community Help Desk is a series of drop in events scheduled at different dates, times and locations throughout Cherokee County. The March session will be at The Hiwassee Dam Senior Center at 7829 Route 294 in Murphy, from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. on Friday March 14th.

Each Wednesday in March we will meet at the pavillion across from the Rock Gym to walk on the Murphy Riverwalk starting at 10:00am. On the last Wednesday in March (26th),  we will be at the Erlanger Fit Plus Track! This is a self-paced walk and beginners are welcome to attend!
