Macon County 4-H Newsletter
March 2025

Time to Sign Up for Lambs
If you are interested in raising and showing a lamb this year, we are taking sign ups now.  We will receive lambs around the first week of June. A few things to know:
  • You raise your lamb at home and must have a dry, covered area to house them
  • Our raising and show season lasts from June until September - October
  • Our club has the opportunity to show 4-6 times during the year
  • A deposit of $50 will reserve your space and covers your lamb, halter and first bag of feed (the $450 lamb costs are sponsored by Farm Bureau)
  • We will meet every other week during the summer at the Macon County Fairgrounds
  • Expect to return your lamb at the end of the show season to support the program next year

For more information, please call Joe Deal or Tammara Talley at 349-2046

Club Corner
Macon Mountain Goats 4-H Club

Thank you to Gabby and Taylor for teaching us about what to have in our kidding supply box.  It is that time of year when our little goats are born and our teaching team is making sure everyone is ready.

This month we will meet on Tuesday March 11th at 6:30 at the Cooperative Extension Office conference room.
Macon Archers

March is the last month we will shoot inside at the fairgrounds. In April, we will move back outside to our 4-H range. We will continue to shoot on Thursdays at 5:00pm for first year shooters and at 6:00pm for advanced shooters.
Macon Sharp Shooters

This month we are moving outside.  Thank you to our coaches for keeping us going through the winter when our skills could have fallen off!  We will return to the sheriff department range on March 15th and 29th at 10am.
Budding Chefs and Top Chefs

Spring is a great time to be a chef. So many fantastic fresh fruits and vegetables popping up.  Last month we learned to make pita sandwich pockets and strawberry oatmeal bars. We also learned about their food groups.  This month we will make a beautiful pasta salad that you can share with your family and friends. Both groups will meet together at 3:45 on Tuesday March 11th at the Cooperative Extension Office.

Sassy Stitchers

We are the busiest creative minds around.  In February, we received a beautiful donation of fabric from a Stitch In Time.  Please thank them for 4-H if you stop by.  The beginners worked to complete their fantastic aprons and the advanced group is working on their first quilted project.  Beginners will meet in March on March 6th and 13th at 3:45.  The advanced group will meet on March 20th and 27th at 3:45.

Fluffy Feather 4-H Club

Thank you to Ms. Stacey for teaching us about flock health in February.  Poultry is a great animal for many families to raise, use their eggs and show during the fall fairs.  Our Macon 4-H poultry club has moved to a 6:30 time slot to allow families that are shooting archery to attend.  Please come join us and learn about the birds you already have or the birds that you would like to add to your family.  Thursday March 20th at 6:30 at the Cooperative Extension Office meeting room.

Macon 4-H Beekeepers

We have a great new group of beekeepers starting the 2025 year.  In February, we have been learning the different parts of the hive and the jobs of different ages of bees.  On Wednesday March 12th we will meet at the Extension Office meeting room to paint hives.  We will decide about moving outside or being inside on March 26th at 5:30pm based on the weather.

Macon Livestock Judging Team

Our Livestock Judging Team had their organizational meeting in February and will be meeting on Mondays from 5:00 - 6:00. There is still space available on this team.  If you would like more information, please call Joe Deal at 828-349-2046
