Forage Management for

Finishing Cattle

(On-farm Workshop)

July 9th, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Join us for an on-farm workshop focused on forage management for finishing cattle. We'll begin with an overview of pastureland ecology and adaptive grazing strategies, then dive into meeting the nutritional needs of finishing animals through forage quality, system design, and supplementation. Topics also include breed selection, managing seasonal harvest demand, evaluating finish, pre-harvest handling, and pricing and marketing considerations. This hands-on event is ideal for producers looking to improve forage-based finishing systems.

Screwworm Webinar

June 27, 10:00 AM

You may have seen recent news stories or press releases from USDA-APHIS concerning the New World Screwworm fly. These pests are typically localized to central and South America, where the US and partners try to maintain a sterile line of flies as a means of control. However, that line has recently been disrupted and NWS have been detected in Mexico, within 700 miles of the US border. These flies are known to lay their eggs in open wounds or lesions, causing very painful infections in livestock.

USDA is making progress toward control and no flies have been detected inside US borders currently.  To keep it that way, surveillance and immediate reporting will be necessary.

4-H Farm Credit

Livestock Show Circuit

Registration Opens July 4th at 5 PM & closes July 18th at 5 PM

We are pleased to have AgCarolina Farm Credit and AgSouth Farm Credit continue as our cosponsors. We appreciate their continued support of this program and our 4-Hers.

This year, the circuit N.C. Cooperative Extension-sanctioned shows are taking place in the following counties (but showman participation is open to all counties): Anson, Cabarrus, Chatham, Cumberland, Lee, Moore, Randolph, Richmond, Robeson, Stanly, and Union counties.

Participation is open to any active 4-Her anywhere (A $125 County fee applies to each county hosting a show). You may post pictures and get updates from the 4-H Farm Credit Showmanship Circuit Facebook page.

Again this year, families will need to register for the Circuit and, in that registration process, indicate which shows they intend to attend, but you will not list specific animals at this time. You will then need to refer to each of your chosen counties’ rules and register for their shows separately by their deadlines (typically 14 days before their show date). Circuit registration will open on July 4 at 5:00 p.m. online. Please register on Eventbrite for the Circuit by July 18 at 5:00 p.m. This deadline is absolute, and we cannot accept your registration once the website shuts down. It is $25 per showman per species.

Please read each county’s rules very carefully. If you do not want to join the Circuit but would like to show in individual county shows, there will be a separate registration sheet/process for that county. Please visit the link to those counties in which you wish to participate.
