Macon County 4-H Newsletter
July 2025

This is a super full newsletter, please make sure you read through all of our information, dates and deadlines.  A few things we want to make sure you see: Kaiya's big news, enrollment for 2025 if you have not already, this year's survey on activities and improvements, outdoor summer fun this month and deadlines for district shooting tournament.  Please read through and call us if you have questions.

!!! Our Livestock Judging Team was interviewed by Gordon Mercer with Citizens Making A Difference and will be on the radio this Saturday July 5th at 8am.  Please check out their interview on WFSC or WNCC at 104.1, 104.9 FM or 1050AM this Saturday!!!

4-H Summer Fun in July

We have 7 fun summer activities coming your way this month.

Beginners Sewing  - Tue. July 8  and Tue. July 15  10am - 12pm
Would you like to try out sewing and see what new things you can learn?  This class is for beginners who want to know how machine and hand sewing works.  We will make a great project to take home and learn skills that go on with you.  This experience will help you decide if want to join the Sassy Stitchers sewing club in the fall
Ages 9 - 18.                 Sign up by Monday July 7th                       Cost: $10.00

Advanced Summer Sewing Project for current Sassy Stitchers  
              Tuesday July 8th                 12:30pm - 3:30pm

Stitchers are you missing machine time and fabric creation?  Come on by for a fun summer project.   Please call and sign up by Monday July 7th.

                                                                                      
Pollinator Science at the Library – Wednesday July 16th              
Calling all nature lovers! 4-H is partnering with the library to provide a fun day of learning about pollinators.  We love our bug friends that provide us so many services that we do not even think about: environmental clean up, helping us garden, flower maintenance and more.  We will play games, plant a pollinator garden to take home and learn about friends to look for out for in our yards.
Ages: all ages                                                                                    Cost: free

Cultural Exploration: Visit Cherokee Indian Village
           Tuesday July 22
                              9:00am-4:00pm

Come visit the historical Oconaluftee Indian Village. Step back in time to the 18th century and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the Cherokee people. 
Ages: Any age with parent attending, 9-18 with 4-H Staff            Cost: $15.00

Outdoor Exploration: Tubing at Deep Creek
        Thursday July 24
                                  9:00am-4:00pm

The summer is hot but the creek is cold!  What better way to enjoy the mountains than to jump in a tube and ride down cool Deep Creek.  Spend the day splashing and playing in one of the best playing creeks in our area.  Please pack a towel, old tennis shoes (no flip flops or crocs here), sunscreen and a lunch. First 5 youth to sign up and pay can ride the van.
Ages: Any age with parent attending, 9-18 with 4-H Staff            Cost: $10.00

Outdoor Exploration: Outdoor Cooking at Standing Indian Campground
        Tuesday July 29                           9:00am-3:00pm
Please join us for this yearly tradition.  We love to go up to Hurricane Creek area of Standing Indian, play in the creek, walk the trails and cook a meal over the campfire.  We might also have a little time to talk about fire safety, identify a few of our important mountain trees and eat a marshmallow...
Ages: Any age with parent, 9 and up may ride the van with 4-H staff.  First 10 to sign up can ride the van with 4-H Staff.                           Cost: $5.00

Art Exploration: Stained Glass Art at Fire and Lights Glass Studio
Thursday August 7th (we know-not July but the date is really important)
This activity is a summer tradition with Macon County 4-H.  Please choose a time of 10:30am or 2:30 pm.  Ages 9-18 can ride in the van and younger 4-Hers please travel with parents.  First come, first serve.  We cannot hold a space without the materials fee.                                                                  Cost: $8.00

(Older 4-Hers please call Tammara if you would like to be a junior leader for any of these activities)

Learn By Doing - have you ever heard that 4-H motto?  Please take a few minutes to help us improve.  Our 4-H staff and volunteers would love to hear what suggestions you have to improve what 4-H has to offer.  This survey is anonymous so please let us know how we can improve.



West Region 4-H Shooting Tournament

The West Region 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament for all outdoor events will be Saturday, August 9th at Polk County Gun Club. July is our month to sign up for competition.  Please talk with your shooting coaches to let them know you are interested and to figure out which disciplines are best for you.  Registration fee is $6.00 per youth, per discipline and $15 for each t-shirt your family would like to purchase.  Please let your coaches or Tammara know what you will be shooting and what size t-shirts you would like by July 23rd.

Club Corner
Macon Archers

We will meet on Thursday July 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th and 31st.  All skill levels are meeting at the same time.  Please arrive between 5 and 5:30 depending on your parents work schedule and we will shoot until 6:30.  Please bring a water bottle. 
We are registering now for our West District 4-H Shooting Tournament that will be held on Saturday August 9th.  Please call or email Tammara by July 23rd so that we know which competition you are interested in.

Macon Sharp Shooters

Thank you to the Jackson County 4-H shooting team for letting us shoot clays at their range last month.  It was REALLY FUN!  Please also speak to your coaches about what you would like to shoot at the August 9th tournament.

Our practice this month will be on Saturday July 12th and 19th at 10:00am. 

Budding Chefs and Top Chefs


Our group will take July off but will meet back in August.  Happy 4th of July!  
Sassy Stitchers

We will have two sewing days this month.

For Beginners - please hold July 8th and 15th from 10:30 - 12:30. 

Advanced sewers will make a project on Tuesday July 8th from 12:30 - 3:30. 

Check out this beautiful quilt that Ms. Deloris and Pearl have been working on this month.


Macon 4-H Beekeepers

In June, our beekeepers were able to study the 8 different types of honey.  We graded them on taste, color and which ones were our favorites.  This month we will meet on Wednesday July 16th and 30th at 5:30.  It is time we get into extracting and bottling our honey. 

4-H Market Lamb Club

June was our first month of meetings and we had two practices with Jackson and Swain County.  This month we will meet on Thursday July 10th and 24th.  We will practice at 6:00.  Please let us know if you need to check out lamb sheers to clip your animal.

Fluffy Feathers 4-H Poultry Club

Congratulations to Ava Perkins and Andi Setser for getting 3 turkey poults each from the NC State Turkey Project.  These two will raise their birds all summer and then choose the best to show at the State Fair.  We will keep you informed of their progress.

Life Stock Judging Team

The team will meet July 7th, 21st and 28th on the usual schedule.  They will also go to a Livestock Judging Clinic with other teams from across the district on July 15-16.  Please check with Joe and Kaiya about what time to meet and what you need to bring for the day.
